I hope you're okay with no lingering after effects. The car, well, looks can be deceiving, but it doesn't look as bad as my Spider's nose looked after I was backed into, and the adjuster felt mine was repairable, so I'm hoping this is a quick and easy repair for the shop and you're back on the road soon. And that the other guy doesn't play the sort of agita-inducing games that the guy that hit me did.

No "injuries", just a wife with sore shoulders (she'll live, I assure you!). The car is in a top-notch repair shop, and the at-fault party's insurance company has already called to say that they've accepted liability. All is going smoothly at this point. I just wish it hadn't happened in the first place. But I'm happy with the progress so far. Thanks everyone!

Happy to hear you and your wife are alright. Sorry about your car. Have to say, to me, it looks like the other vehicle hit you pretty hard and that your car started to do what it was supposed to do, meaning crumple around the passenger area.

I do the same thing, and also seem to leave more space in front of me then most people do when stopped. I also try to keep the habit of staying in gear with the wheels pointed straight ahead when stopped at a light, and or in a turn lane, etc. I've been lucky and this has saved me a couple of times.

My other vehicle is a Canary Yellow Ford Ranger extended cab pickup truck. I was stopped on a busy street waiting for traffic to clear to make a left hand turn into a side street and there was another driver in a full size car who was to my left at the side street I was turning into. We was also waiting for traffic to clear so he could make a left hand turn. My truck was dead in front of his. When the traffic coming oposite me stopped I turned left. So did the other driver, and befoe he moved I saw him turn his head from left down the street the way he was turning, "through me", to the right to make sure no one was going to rear end him when he made his left hand turn. Needless to say my left front fender and wheel stopped his car dead and the look of suprise on his face was memorable, like "Where the heck did THAT come from?" So, how does one miss a 15 foot long bright yellow pickup truck that is a foot taller then your car and stopped sideways dead in front of you? But he did... I had to replace the fender, straighten the bumper, and replace the power steering unit on the truck. He had a "scratch" on his bumper! Just glad I wasn't driving my Spider that day or he would have rolled over my hood!!

Sorry. That stinks for sure. At least it appears that it didn't buckle the rear quarters.

I'm with ya, JohnM...if it had, the car'd be a total loss for sure. Here in NC, if the damages exceed 75% of the vehicle's value, it's deemed a t/l. I'd be surprised if the damage to my car will hit that threshhold. It might, but I kinda doubt it.

Status update: The car has been inspected by the claim adjuster, and not surprisingly, the parts prices and labor times do not come up on his estimating software (since this is an unusual car). So, he's using all of the usual Alfa catalogs for parts prices, and will pow-wow with the body shop manager on the labor times, and will get back with me MAYBE today, but likely next week. I'll then know if the car is deemed repairable, or a total loss. VERY smooth process so far, on the part of the insurance company. I'll report back when I have more info.

Final status update: The bad news is that they totaled my Spider. The good news is that the insurance settlement is very fair and accurate (possibly even generous!). Cannot badmouth the insurance company on this one...they were very professional, accommodating, and easy to deal with. So this is basically the end of the story, I guess. See the "For Sale" section of this BB for various unused parts and bits that I'll have for sale "cheap". Cheers,

David

David:

Couple of questions:

What is the hidden damage we are not seeing? I assume there must be some with the total.

Have you considered buying the car back? Usually insurance will sell the car back for $500 or so. This would leave you in the position to fix the car and have a salvaged titled car OR you could part the car and make quite a bit of money from the process.

Your spider was such a nice spider. Seems a shame to let it go set in some junk yard. Anyway, sorry to hear about the end result.

Best Regards,
John M

That's what I did with a Chrysler LeBaron Convertible that was totaled (no doubt about that in this case) when an elderly gentleman hit the gas thinking he had his foot on the brake and plowed into 3 parked cars. Our Chrysler was the meat in the 3-car-sandwhich. Every body panel was ruined and even the top was torn.

Anyway, after negotiating with the insurance company (and I can't say it was pleasant...) I did buy the car back and parted it out. I don't recall what the cost was but it was more than $500 though. However, I more than made up the difference by parting it out.

Hi David,

Sorry to hear about your spider but glad the insurance treated you well. I'm sure you will be able to find another great spider to enjoy.

If you don part out this car I'm looking for some parts for my 74 spider.

- Rear lower valence if still good?
- B Post covers black - right & left sides
- Sun visors
- Metal wipers
- door weather stripping

Thanks and good luck.

Frank

John, after getting the trunk open and the trunk trim removed, MUCHO add'l damage presented itself. Trunk floor, rear body panel, etc. The insurance company did give me an option on keeping the salvage vehicle, but I wasn't interested, since the settlement with me giving up the car was so generous. But SOMEONE will buy it and either repair it, or sell off the parts. Either way, the car is "back on the road" in one form or another! It's all good in the end.

David
