Relays in the fusebox?
Hello -
I have a 1991 S4 Spider and recently I noticed that there are two empty relay spaces in the fusebox. On the top row of the fusebox (fuses on bottom), there are 6 spaces for relays, but there are only four in those spaces. There are two relays below them, and between those there are no slots for relays. It doesn't say in my manual what those relays are for or where they should be, and there is no diagram that I can find for an S4 Spider. There are also two behind the passenger seat, under the little panel. When I bought the car, there was a broken (physically cracked and destroyed relay) in one of those empty places. No one at any auto parts store could figure out what it was or what it does.
I appreciate it if anyone has a diagram. It seems that everything works - my car doesn't have fog lights or a hardtop (defroster). I can give a more accurate description of which two spots are empty (I'm doing this from memory), but I think I have it right. Of course, if there should be a relay in one of those, I'd like to put it in there but I don't know what to put in there without knowing what they are. As I said, there was one in there when I got the car - it was broken though, and foolishly, I forgot which slot it came from.
Thanks in advance for any help. I sure don't want to fry anything!

Fusebox relays from the '91 service manual. Couldn't ID right away the two behind the seat but I'll keep looking.

Hey, as long as you have that posted, which fuse is for the radio? Is there a different one for the security feature?

Thanks again Jim -
Looks like I'm missing the "Light Timer" and the "Rear Window Heat" (which is N/A for my car). But I would like timed lights! What kind of relay do I get for that application? Is it just a normal 5 prong relay? I know nothing about relays/
Thanks in advance.

Howdy:
I don't know what the light timer does, but last May when I had a "no start" problem, I found that the light timer relay was blown. Continuity was not there. I replaced it with a new $40 one from Difatta. Quite literally, as soon as I replaced that relay, my car started right up (when I turned the key of course), and I haven't had any problems since.
Anyone know what the "light timer" really does??

My inderstanding of the light timer relay is that it turns off the courtesy lights x number of seconds after a door is closed. It is basically a 'delay-on-break' timer so any old 4 or 5 prong relay won't work. Don't know the Bosch part number but the Alfa # is 60519098.
The service manual lists 4 relays by the ECU behind the right seat; fuel pump, timing variator and auxillary. The forth relay, which is schematically similar to the other three relays, has a built in diode and is called simply Motronic relay with diode.
And for AlfaMale, here are the fuse ratings.

Are there other sources for these relays besides Difatta?

IAP has some of the relays as well as Vick's. And if they are NLA....snag one from Alfa Parts Exchange.
Papa was correct on the function of the light timer. Courtesy floor and ceiling lights (i.e. hardtop) timed to shut off after around 5-10 seconds after the door is closed. Heated rear window is for the hardtop.
Best Regards,
John M

I think vehicle wiring products here in the UK have that relay. Don't know the number but when it works the lights have a nice 10 second delay before fading out (as long as they are on the right setting on the lamp itself which have a 3 way tilt function. Google for there website. I get all my electrical from them although with the current exchange rate it may be costly!

on the 90 its a Sipea #0679
its been pulled for one of 3 reasons. 1) its double the height of the other fuses and gets easily kicked and broken off. 2) a mechanic pulled it because he was working on the interior. 3) the switches on the door malfunctioned, and instead of cleaning them, someone pulled the relay.
