How to post images from the "Car Disk" manual
Does anyone know how to post individual pages from the "Car Disk" CD?
Just spent too much time trying to figure it out and got no where.
Couldn't even figure out how to E-mail a page of the CD.

FYI, there is another thread about the use or posting of CarDisk information which is copyrighted material. You might want to review it so that this pot is not stirred again...:

I've sent two E-mails to the "car disk" vendor; one requesting info about purchasing their product, which was answered promptly and a second, asking for info about their arrangement/copyright with Alfa, no answer.
My wife just purchased a Vespa and I downloaded all of the manuals off the internet which by the way are sold on Ebay by someone lying about copyrights.

There is not, and there has never has been any arrangement between Alfa Romeo and CarDisc, and CarDisc has no rights over the contents of Alfa Romeo publications. I am not in any way suggesting that anyone can do whatever they please with a CarDisc CD, but it should be clear that the copyrights for the Alfa manuals, and brochures, do not belong to CarDisc. (FTR, I think that anyone who has gathered brochures and manuals and makes them available on a CD has the right to get paid for their effort, such as CarDisc has done.)
Alfa manuals, and other publications are also available from the Alfa Romeo Owners Club. These official publications were given to the club by Alfa Romeo, and the club does not sell these, nor does it try to (mis)use these publications to raise revenue. One can obtain a copy of these manuals simply by asking, and covering the cost (nominal) of making a copy. Also, Alfa's Archivio Storico will also make publications available at no cost, provided they have the publication being requested. All it takes is an e-mail to ArchivioStorico@AlfaRomeo.com.
Best regards,

Thanks Enrique, for confirming what I suspected.
Since Cardisk has no more rights to the info than me, do you know how to copy and post.

Are you certain about this? If what you say is correct, how can CARDISC place a 2004 copyright notice on an ALFA publications that appear on their disc?....why would ALFA ROMEO allow this to continue unchecked?

When and if push came to shove Cardisc would simply admit that the copyright claim was just for the CD cover artwork and not for the manuals themselves.

I have to say after visiting the CarDisc webpage, I'm fairly unimpressed with the information offered. There is no illusion to the material being copyrighted, there is no about us page, the home page is simply links to their sales pages. The only contact information is an e-mail address, phone number, and post office box. It appears their primary purpose is selling CarDisc's not furnishing information other than how to purchase them. There is no return or exchange policy posted etc.
- You might try contacting Franco D here on the bb who claims to have a close, if not personal relationship, with CarDisc and is the original poster who challenged Brian on the other carbase online thread about the legitimacy of posting copyrighted material. (For those that have not read the other thread, please do for Brian's apology and explanation, or accept my summary explanation that Brian never intended for the information to be made public; however, Google found it and it became public, at which time it was removed.)
- You could contact the copyright clearing center and check on the copyright and see exactly what it covers in this instance and who actually holds the copyright.
- You could also read old Alfa Owners of the years when CarDisc first appeared. I know that Pat used his Note Brevi column at that time to review the CarDisc product. There might be some mention there of copyright or if there was an agreement between parties and how it came about.
I am of the opinion that something is being overlooked here, being missed, or misunderstood. I can't imagine CarDisc being able to sell their product for this length of time without some type of agreement or copyright protection. Alfa Romeo is pretty stringent and enforces readily their copyright authority and protections of the badge, the name, and pretty much everything else in that regard. So I can't imagine this being an exception or having been overlooked by an accident.

Posting Car Disc Images
If your CarDisc is in PDF format (like my 164 CarDisc), you can highlight the area you want to remove for posting and then click on Edit Copy in Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can then open a word processing program and click on Edit Paste to paste the selected area into a new document. Save this document. You can then post it on the BB or where ever you want. If you have Adobe Acrobat (rather than just the reader), you can highlight the area you want, click on the snapshot tool (looks like a camera) and it will take a "photo" of what you selected that you can then paste into other documents.
If your CarDisc is in the older format (like my Duetto CarDisc), I have no idea how you can extract information from it to post.

Looking at my 2000 spider disk, as well as my GTV6 & Milano disk, both are a compilation of mostly thousands of pic files, each representing a page, plus a few bmp's for the photos. While there seems no readily apparent way to easily match the arcane file name to a specific page, one can simply explore the disc and copy and paste any page into an email attachment, print it, or whatever. You could spend a few hours and recreate your version by indexing their disc to become your own, or trial and error works too.
This does not address right or wrong, simply my shoot from the hip observation. YMMV

You can also use the tool, as I recall it's shaped like a capital "I", in Pdf format that draws a square around the portion that you wish to capture, and then copy and paste to a word document, e-mail, or other medium.
Like Richard, by posting this information, which could be used in countless other instances to accomplish copying and pasting, I am not acknowledging the legality of copying from a CarDisc or making any judgment as to its legality.

What possible interest would Alfa Romeo have? Would they be damaged or lose income from second/third party reprinting of out of date manuals, of course not.
I don't want this to sound like I don't appreciate what the people responsible for "cardisk" have done. They provided a valuable service that I acknowledge and paid for, but they or their friends shouldn't try to control access (previous threads) to Alfa information.

I can get images from a cardisc manual, but it takes a little effort. First, you need to be able to print to pdf. You can find free print to pdf drivers on the internet. The one I use can be found at is PDFill PDF Editor with FREE PDF Writer and FREE PDF Tools - www.PDFill.com. This freebie allows you to print to pdf and generate pdf's from image files. You can also go from pdf to jpeg. It's what I use to make pdf files of the Alfa manuals.
Once you print the single page to pdf, you can use the utlity to create a jpeg or, you can use the snap tool to capture the portion of the pdf into memory. From there, you can paste into your image editor and save as a jpeg.
The version of cardisc that I have looks for a real printer. Even if you make the pdf driver the default printer, the cardisc still wants to print to the printer. So, I had to disable the printer (take it offline), then restart cardisc.
