TI Blathering
Thought I'd bring you all up to date on my TI. As you probably know I've been having a fuel delivery issue. After rebuilding the Solex the problem was more pronounced. Essentially it would die when you stomped on the gas.
After checking and rechecking the carb and the needle valve washer thickness (it must be 1mm) I pulled the top off the mechanical fuel pump to check the filter. Well the mesh filter was clean as a whistle. While I was down there I decided to check the hoses to and from the pump. I noticed that the hose running from the pump to the carb had a bit of a kink in it. I pulled it off and bingo, there was the problem. The inside had expanded to severely limit the amount of fuel that could pumped through it. Basically it was a clogged artery.
I ran up to my Uncle's garage/gas station and bought new hose, did some bypass surgery. Once that was done I fired her up. After lettting her warm up I took her out for a drive.
The symptoms were gone. She drove like a champ. I eventually braved I-5 and she did just fine. Got her up to 80 mph without a problem. I headed back home and did the final adjustments on the carb. She is now running very very smoothly. It's a great car.
Next is new springs, tires, and perhaps new shocks. Further out is the body work.
The column shift works very well and is like second nature. I can pretty much rip through the gears now with ease. The TI is a very well natured car.
Ok, that's it for now.

Glad to hear you found the source of the problem!
Regarding the new springs/shocks, Will you opt for standard ride height, or a subtile lowering of the bodyheight? And, Bilsteins or Koni's?
Have a blast!

I'll probably have some sport springs put on her. This will lower it a bit. I don't anything too extreme though. As for shocks I don't know at this point. Either Konis or Bilsteins would be fine I imagine.
I don't want a jarring ride as the car won't be tracked and our streets here in Seattle are rough and full of potholes. Something slightly firmer than stock will work.
Hey, where'd you get the filter for your Solex?

Do column shift cars ever get the "2nd gear crunch blues"?
Great work on finding the fuel issue!

I would assume so as it's the same transmission as the floor shift cars. The only difference is how the selector rods are actuated.

Well done!
Your experience is exactly what I love about owning Alfas...having a problem and, after stressing about it and coming up with a plan to diagnose the problem, searching for it, finding it and fixing it (with a relatively low level of time and money consumed). Problem is, that doesn't happen very often for me.
Oh well, the times it happens always make me hunger for another and gets me through all the other times when I walk away frustrated.

I dunno if it was well done or not. I really should have caught it about a month ago. But oh well. I figured it out and it's done. And true, that is the joy of owning an older Alfa.

The column-shift trans is basically the same as the floor-shift trans. The guts are identical, but as Damian mentioned, the shift rods come out the front, into the bell housing, rather than into the rear case piece. Those two big unused side holes on most 105 bellhousings hold the silentbloc bushings for the complicated shift linkage to work through. The rear case piece is different, having no shifter tower, or shifter. But the guts and function are the same.

@Magista: you mean the tiny fuelfilter inside the solex? or you mean my open airfilter? (see avatar)?
Got the open airfilterone from Lynx in Australia, looks really good, fitted like a glove & not expensive (except the importing tax) , I don't have the partnumber here, but if you are interested, I'll look it up for you in my garage...
