Speedometer Gauge questions

Greetings,
I'm getting ready to get put my Super on the road, but am hoping to address I have. The speedometer gauge has stopped working...in fact the needle is still pointing at the 20 km/h mark when stopped. If I recall correctly, it appeared "sticky" when traveling at higher speeds and would then slowly return to 20, but it would never track actual speed. What has me puzzled is that the odometer is working correctly and tracks distance properly. I haven't taken the gauge cluster out yet, but I believe that both the speedometer and odometer use the same cable as their "input".

I read the thread about greasing the cable, but since the odometer is working, I don't think this will solve my problem. Do you think this is just a bad gauge that will need to be replaced to fix the issue?

I appreciate any insight anyone can provide....

-Raym

Sounds like the cable is OK, but the speedo is bad.

+1.

Rather than looking for a replacement speedo, consider sending it to International Speedometer or another guage repair place. It's a good time to replace the guage lightbulbs while you're at it.

Be prepaired for numerous cuts on your hands as you try to undo the two knurled knobs which hold the retaining bracket onto the insturment. Mine looked light I was fighting a cat...and lost

Thanks for the tip. Any idea of a price range for this?

This is why I've not taken it out yet. I just reinstalled the dash of my GT about 2 months ago and had to have my wife reinstall the gauge clusters because she has much smaller hands....despite that, my hands got shredded due to my monkeying around prior to her stepping in.

Yes the speedo and odo work off the same cable. Probably the cable is turning OK, which is mechanically connected to the odo, but magnetically connected to the speedo, and something in the speedo mechanism sounds stuck.

You can verify the cable is turning OK by disconnecting it at the top, and while the trans is turning (driving or otherwise), feel if the cable insert is turning.

In addition to the shop mentioned, Palo Alto Speedo here in Calif is a good place, though expensive. The cleaned and serviced the tach and speedo on my Super, and made up a cable for my Giulietta.
