Trunk Springs?

How do you adjust the trunk springs w/o killing yourself? I need to move them one notch down as the trunk lid does not hold its self open right now.

Ditto. Pulling on the end of the spring with a pair of pliers resulted in a vertically sloped learning curve.

I'm thinking of a 1 ft. length of metal rod (or perhaps a longish, slender combination wrench) passed through the lower end-loop of the spring to a depth of 4" or so. The upper end of the rod will be the handle end of the tool. The bottom end of the rod, projecting through the spring end-loop and down into the trunk area, will act as the pivot of a classic lever by connecting it to the last notch (an indentation in the very end of whatever you call the trunk-lid-hinge-spring-notch-bar) via a few inches of looped wire.

When you guys figure this out, let me know. I'm tired of the Super trunk hitting me on the head.

This is not an easy operation and even with the spring all the way down, my trunk lid does not stay all the way up. It hovers around 5/8 and 3/4 open.
I used a drum brake tool that is made to allow you to install the brake return springs. It has a long rod with a sort of notch on the end. The rod goes through the spring hook and the notch catches on the spring anchor. Then you pull down and the spring is supposed to slip down the rod and over the anchor.
Maybe I can take some pics tomorrow. Will do my best.

Install the spring

I have 4 pictures for you folks.

The first is an overview of the drum brake spring tool.

Second is the tip of one of the handles of the tool which you use to stretch and install a spring. Notice the notch which you hook onto the anchor piece that you want the spring to go over.

Three shows the spring on the tool as it would look when you start. You then hook the tip of the tool onto the anchor and push the other end of the tool down holding it so the notch stays on the anchor.

Four is a shot of how things look just as the spring snaps down along the tool and over the anchor. It is a good idea to put some grease on the tool before you start to help the spring move. It is a better idea to have a helper who can hold the lid off your head untill the point of picture 4. Then they drop the lid on your head and push the spring off the tip of the tool and onto the anchor. Holding the tip in the correct place can be difficult. Work carefully and deliberately.
