Importing Giulia Ti
I'm going to be importing a '64 Giulia Ti from Canada into the US. Check out the "Picture Room" for more info.
If anyone has any tips about importing let me know.
Anyway, I'm pretty excited about the whole thing and can't wait to pick it up.

Being a '64, there are no DOT or EPA requirements. Should be a piece of cake.

See if you can get a bill of sale for less than what you are actally paying, then the US customs duties will be less.

I don't think that's a good idea. If there is any bank transaction that could be traceable, the feds could catch up with him. Small transactions aren't usually monitored, but large ones can be. It's really not worth the risk.

Check out:
http://search.cbp.gov/cs.html?charse...col=&n=1&la=en
this might be the same one, but check to make sure:
http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/...ortingacar.doc
Kinda lenghty, but it'll give you some guidelines...best advice, go to www.cbp.gov and look for the CBP location you'll be crossing through...likely its Blaine Washington...no harm in giving them a call and just asking.
And don't lie about the bill, its likely you're not paying a large sum of money anyhow, no use getting caught and having the car seized...or worse, you seized.
Also, check here for info on travelling over the border

Thanks for the info. From my cursory research it's not going to be too hard to get it through. Basically a bill of sale and then pay The Man his cash which I can write off my allowance.
Now, do I drive the sucker through...OF COURSE!

If you can manage to get the car away from its owner without paying for it, the whole cost will be a lot less. Just explain to the customs agent that its stolen and you wont even have to pay import duty.

Just a suggestion. I really don't think the government would bother tracing a transaction of less than $100,000...and maybe not even then...

Plus the amount of money I'm paying for the car will not warrant a huge duty. I'd rather pay the miniscule amount than get busted by the Canucks. Believe me, I'm getting it for next to nothing.

Ok. so I just spoke with the official Importation Car Guy at the Blaine, WA crossing. Here is the skinny on importing a vehicle over 25 years from Canadia to the U.S. No DOT, no EPA. Here's how you do it:
1. Fill out the HS-7 form found on the NHTSA website. Check Box 1 stating that the car is over 25 years old.
2. Get Invoice/Bill of Sale from seller.
3. Drive to Blaine and go into the Truck Customs area when exiting Canadia.
4. They MAY make you fill out an EPA exempt form and should have them there.
5. Pay duty IF the Agent decides to make you (he may not). The duty is 2.5% of the value of the car.
6. After inspection they will give you a 7501 form that states it was properly imported.
7. Drive home then to your local vehicle licensing place w/ all documentation.
8. Register car.
9. Terrorize Seattle.
That how it's done in a nutshell...theoretically of course.

Yup.
I just imported a 69 Spider today. It was dead easy. Customs guy didn't even make me pay any duty!

Don't forget about Washington State Use Tax:
http://www.dor.wa.gov/content/taxes/use/default.aspx
I imported some art from Canada via Federal Express and about 4 months later I got a letter from the state - seems the State tax guys monitor importation stuff from the Federal guys.

I doubt this applies to my situation as a taxes will be paid upon registering the car.
