Super Sedans

Wondering what order BB members would put the sedans in, as far as desirability goes from most to least? Which models are more desirable? Am thinking of selling a 99 Jag xj8L with 37K miles on it. Any input would be appreciated.

There was quite a few changes from Alfa with the Giulia Sedan. Early ones did not have wood trim, they had matching boby paint on the dash. Shifter on the colum, later giulia had on the floor. Floor mounted pedals vs. firwall pedals, head lights and grills changed alot, the list goes on. Also, engines 1300 or 1600

If i was you i would do alot of research and figure out which model/year you like best. For me it was 1970 Giulia Super 1600.

The variants of Giulia sedans are many, similar overall, and very confusing, especially from a nomenclature aspect. Check out Berlina Register and click on the Giulia discussion to get a primer. There's lots more info on the web about it. My own take from best to least-best (no such thing as "worst" Alfa sedan), listing models realistically to be found in the US. This assumes decent, stock condition, but they call all be modified pretty easily for a lot more performance. And finding a good one of some of these can be quite tough.
* Giulia Super
* 1750 Berlina
* 2000 Berlina
* Giulia TI
* Early Alfetta sedan
* Late Alfetta sedan
* Milano
* 164

You're not likely run into a Giulia TI Super, Giulietta TI, 2600 Berlina, Alfa Sei, or other exotic, so I've stuck with what might actually come up on the BB, ebay, or CL. Just my two cents with two seconds of thought put into it. Others will feel differently.

My order of preference is similar to Andrews, except that I'd move the Giulia Ti to the second spot, and then move both Alfetta entries to the bottom.

Sedans

Andrew, thanks for the reply. Would probably be more interested in models prior to the Alfettas and 164s. Possibly narrow years down to 67-73. Will do some serious research and ask some more questions. I know BB members are a good source of information.

I think the most common preference from this era you'll find will be:
1. Any Giulia sedan.
2. 1750 Berlina.
3. 2000 Berlina.

Those are your only choices for Alfa sedans from this period, unless you're someone that sold Alfasuds.

Sedans

I remember seeing Berlinas in the dealers showroom where I used to live as well as the spider and GTVs but do not remember seeing any Supers. Were these imported into the US through dealers or just from European prior owners?

Berlinas were sold in the US 1969, 1971-1974.

Thumbs up

I had a new Giulia Super and it was and still is an outstanding car for handling and braking.

I understand that a 2 L Twin Spark will fit.

In which case,

Jim Skatoff had written: "Am thinking of selling a 99 Jag xj8L with 37K miles on it. Any input would be appreciated."

Did you really mean ANY input? If you want mine, it would be to unload that *&^*()& British car and replace it with an Alfa.

Desirability is subjective. While I might personally concurr with Andrew's list, if you regularly carry more than one passenger, then the larger wheelbase/rear legroom of a Berlina might make it more desirable for YOU. Join your local Alfa club, sweet talk the sedan owning members into letting you drive their TI's, Super's, and Berlinas, and decide from there.

Red face No doubt in my mind

Being a sucker for loyalty, my clear preference is with my very own 1972 Giulia Super 1300 - why??

Well, top hinged pedals, longer door handles, diff ratio retained but 2 litre motor dropped in which has made fitment of a torsen 40% LSD imperative.

Berlina's became too big and heavy and the late model Supers had a nicer interior, especially the dash & dials.

TExt won't make much sense, but who needs words when looking at a beautiful Alfa

Not to forget that there are good sedans out there other than Alfas. BMW 2002, Bavaria, M3, M5. I personally like Jags, but have never owned one. I'd be partial to a Mk II or early XJ6 with manual trans if you can find one.

I drove a '67 Jaguar 420 (their forgotten sedan) daily for several years- it used the E-Type chassis (suspension, etc.) & 4.2L motor, but two SU's instead of three on the E.

The car was a hoot when the auto box was shifted manually, and the car could be thrown around with gusto- lotsa body lean, terrific engine sound. When in traffic, the wood & leather ambiance could be enjoyed- I've never had so relaxing a car in traffic (unless over 95 degrees outside, when one had to watch the temp guage for fear of a boilover).

Unfortunately, it once stranded my pregnant wife and I at in intersection (bad alternator), plus the Michelin repro's tossed treads off twice. Shoulda kept it as a backup/fun car, but the wife was adament about my making it go away...

Now waiting for a Mk II- but it'll be a long wait, unfortunately.

Blasphemy, I know, but I love, Love, LOVE my E36 M3 Sedan. Fantastic car.
At the same time, I'm completely smitten with the Giulia Super that just got back from the paint shop, and that I'm trying to get back on the road this year. It's been off the road since 1984(!). Once it's running it's going to be really tough to justify keeping 2 Alfas + the M3 just for me, since my wife doesn't drive stick. I'm still not sure what's going to give.
