My '77 Nuova Super Project

Spring has finally arrived in Chicago and have pulled out a couple of my cars for the first time this year. I thought you guys might be interested in seeing some pics of the Super that I have been working on for about 3 years. It started out as a nice driver but I could not take it and ending up pulling it apart and sending the shell off to a local body shop. The owner of the body shop (Modena Auto Body), Carlo, works on old Alfa's as time allows. He ended up stripping the entire car to bare metal. Of course, we found some rust and a little Body Damage (door bottoms, trunk lid rust etc..) Fortunately, the underside of the car was excellent (the car was in Italy until just before I got it). Carlo does nice work but it takes a while (2.5 years to be more specific). So, while Carlo worked on the body, the project took on a larger scope...... I decided that to rebuild the mechanicals and up grade everything a bit. The concept was to keep the car looking pretty stock but really improve the performance. Soooooo....I built a 2 liter with a 10 to 1 pistons, a centerline big valve performance head, more agressive cams (from an Alfetta motor I built years ago), rejetted carbs, lightened flywheel, port matched the intake and exhuast manifolds, GTA replica headers, GTA replica exhaust (a bit longer for the sedan), electric fan, GTV6 alternator. I had the transmission rebuilt with lightened gears (thanks John at Autosprint). I had Mike Besic build up the limited slip 4.56 rear end from my long gone Berlina. Mike added extra LSD clutches to provide more lock. I like working with suspensions so I took this on myself. I had a set of original GTA (14x6)wheels so magnafluxed and had them repainted them to look as original. I added Falken Azenis tires (the old style) in 195/60x14. I ordered adjustable height front and rear spring perches manufactered by Ground Control. These allow me to use 2.25 an.d 2.5 inch generic Hypercoil racing springs (700 front and 175 rear). I added adjustable upper arms and a Shankle front sway bar. Andy from Performatek sold me poly bushings to replace all of the rubber. I installed new ball joints and tie rod ends. A few days ago, I ordered the front geometry correction kit from Max Banks at Alfaholics. I have finished the suspension off with a set of Koni yellows. In the Braking department, I have substituted GTV6 Brembos, sloted rotors, Stainless Goodrich flexible lines
and a 22 mm master cylinder. Cosmetically, I am substituting a late Super Grill with the 7" outer lamps and the late Super parking/turn signal lamps. I also replaced all of the lenses and seals....Whew! a lot of work! Check out the pictures....I have a lot to do yet and I am hoping/planing to finish in time for the convention.....

More Pictures, Lots of Progess Today!

As I pick up the pace to make it to the convention. I am taking every opportunity to work on the car: early mornings, days off etc. Today, I finished installing the Mike Besic built LSD rear-end, the suspension and the rear brakes. The rear coil-over set-up works really well but took some time to assemble and install. I have adjusted the ride-height once allready. This is very easy to do! It appears that each full turn of the lower collar equates to approximately a 1/4 inch of ride-height change. At this point, I have about 3.5 inches in travel in bump and about 4.5 inches in rebound. If I want it lower in the rear, I suspect that I should make the shock mounts in the trunk a couple of inches taller so that the car does not bind in bump. I learned this hard way in my brothers GTV a few years ago. When driving on the track the car would oversteer instantly on turn in requiring the driver to counter-steer through the entire corner! The shocks were binding in bump (compression). Check out the shinny gas tank in the last photo, I had it coated inside and out.

Question

David,

I need a tow hook to put on my Super, and I like the one you have on the left front of your car. Where did you get it? I like the idea of it folding down, that way you don't run into it as you walk around the car.

Thanks,

Tow Hook

Gillford,

BTW, your old car is now finished and will be raced for the first time this weekend. The car was completely redone (mechanically) by Mike Besic.

The tow hook is an aftermarket piece for a S2000 Honda. I can't acutually remember exactly what vendor. I had to modify it to make it look (not too modern).

David

Progress continues as the convention is less than 1 month away

Since my last post I have installed the steering box and idler arm. Yesterday the eingine and transmission went back in pretty easily. It is a tight fit with the trans attached to the engine. Note that I use a modified towing strap rather than chains to lift the components. I find that a strap makes it easier to adjust the angle. A strap is also much less likely to damage components. I also taped cardboard to the front and rear of the engine compartment. Note the later starter, poly trans mount and alloy guibo cage. I have read here that the poly trans mount transfers too much vibration so I modified it by drilling a couple of holes in the larger sections of the poly to soften it. We shall see. I am still planning to make it to the convention with this car. I it will be tight as I have show up at work too.

A couple of other notes on this install

Next time I do this I will tape more cardboard around the engine compartment. I will also remove the air cleaner casting before my attempt as I ended up removing it before I got the motor positioned on the crossmember. Note also the alloy engine mount stiffeners from Paul Spurell. My brother has a set on his GTV street track car and they do not increase the NVH but they DO keep the engine from moving around during extreme manuvers (track driving). I have the today off so....back to the garage!
