OT: YOM plates in Ca, extending to pre-69?
I just stumbled on this page on CA's DMV site:
Vehicle Registration for 2008
If I'm reading it correctly, as of July 2009 we'll be able to use YOM registration (ie, black plates!) for our 60s cars. Cool!

Hoo Ray! I have the original black plates for my Giulia spider, but because I received no paperwork when I was given the car (no title, no registration, no nuttin), the DMV wouldn't let me register it with those plates. Then, like a fool, I told them it was a '63, so I couldn't use orange plates either.
Was 1969 the last year for black plates? Somehow, I thought the blue plates didn't appear until 1971 or so.

I'm not positive but I don't think I've ever seen a '70 car with black plates. My '69 BMW has black plates (YKE...).

Lots of strange plates appear on Alfa's, due to some cars sitting at dealerships for several years. My dad had a '65 Giulia Sprint Speciale (he bought it from the original owner around 1972), CA blk plate ZSF104, which puts it at a late '69 (?) registration- probubaly took the dealer that long to sell it!
Peter Satori Motors in Pasadena had a Wedgewood blue Giulia Sprint Speciale, unregistered, in their back storage room through the early 80's. I assume it was sold and registered at some point, so it would probubaly be on a blue license plate, but which would be the original plate for the car
Some black-plate era owners "upgraded" to blue plates in the 70s to "modernize their cars, which is what happened to my car

Hope that someone can explain just how this would apply to our pre-'70 cars !
Can I put black plates on my '64 Spider ??
Thankfully, the Duetto still wears her original plates in perfect condition !

I had blue plates on my 65 Veloce when it was registered in 1970 in California. My 67 Super has the original black plates that start with the letter U. You might want to read up on this page (yeah I know its Porsche, but it is good information) about when plates were issued and how to get the right plates installed (providing you have a set of 2 matching plates).

I don't remember what years the plates changed....but they were originally black on yellow and when they ran out of numbers they went to yellow on black, then to the blue/yellow combinations, then to adding the extra 1 digit in front of the letters, then the white reflectorized plates, and then the addition of the wider variety of environmental plates or personalized plates to free up numbers and make money. My 72 MB had yellow on black as did my 69 MG-BGT, both of my Pintos, 72 and 73 had yellow on blue and I'm pretty sure my 70 MG-BGT also had yellow on black plates.
I'm not sure what the Bimmers or MB have sitting in the driveway. I know the plate numbers but not the colors. If I think about it, I'll look tomorrow.
Chris is correct his super has the original yellow on black plates that we bought the car with. I heard that car was up for sale at the last AROSC get-together. Correct? Incorrect?

Black plates ran out in 68/69, and blue plates were instituted during the same phase-in period. So in some places where they had a good supply of black plates, you see them on cars all the way up to early 1970. In other places where they ran out of black plates early, you see 68s with original blue. It just depends.
This is great news.
Still waiting for the Special Plate Unit in Sac to approve the yellow-plate request for my 60 Spider.

So Andrew, can I waltz down to the DMV and request black plates for my '65?
If not, then this is of little use.

I don't know the status of the black-plate proposal. Someone else posted that. It has come up before and been shot down, mostly by police depts, but maybe it's approved now. I dunno.
I just commented on the transition date from black to blue. But yes, a 65 would have had black plates new, in the R range. My 65 Bug is RMH

I don't think this is about reissuing black plates; rather, if you happen to have (or buy) a set of black plates that are DMV clear, you can apply to use them, legally, on your old car.

Well, that's what I wondered !!
No problem getting the black plates ( I may even 'find' some around the shop ;^) ), just wondered what the proceedure is.

yes, sorry I missed your question before. From what I can tell, the plates will need to be genuine and serviceable and DMV-clear (ie, either out of their system or otherwise clear) in order to use them. Also I guess this is being seen as a guaranteed revenue stream, which is more important now (?) than the fact that it's in 'violation' of the rule that plates be appropriately reflectorized.
