Saturday Update #16

Well, guess what? The car was delivered to us this vary afternoon from the body shop. There are still a few issues that were over looked, but nothing that will stop us from putting it back together.

There will be no update next Saturday, because everybody, except possibly me, will be in Monterey for the Historic's.

Anyway here are a few pictures from today:

Hi,

All of the pictures I've taken so far are already in this thread. As for re-assembly, I don't want to guess at the time frame and then get depressed when it's not done. The work to be done, in the order I think it will happen is: re-install the wiring harness to the back half of the car; re-install the fuel tank; re-install the lights and other misc body part like the grill, etc; re-key the door and trunk locks (I didn't get a key with the car); have the new headliner installed; install the SPARCO roll cage; re-install front and rear glass; fabricate new seat mounts; have new carpet installed; install new seats (front only); install new door rubber gaskets/seals; install new MagnaFlow exhaust system; mount the new wheels/tires; adjust the suspension to lower the rear a little; drive around for awhile.

There is however a "soft" deadline. I want to attend a Time Trial/Race with the car in Nevada at a track called Spring Mountain Raceway in the town of Pahrump which is about 60 miles west of Las Vegas in the middle of September.

Wish me luck.

Saturday Update #17

Well, it's been two weeks since my last update, you'd think I'd have a lot to report, but I don't. The new headliner is in, as well as the front and rear glass. This coming week will hopefully see the installation of the roll cage. I forgot to take the camera, a the pictures on the cell phone don't do it justice, so I won't subject you to them.

Update: 9-17-2008

Well, quit a bit of progress in the last couple of weeks, and a lot just today. A couple of weekends ago, the new headliner got installed, along with the inner weather strips. And just today, the roll cage was installed, and I just happened to be there (I took a mental health day off of work). Next is the carpet, which should be started in a day or two.

Update: 10-2-2008

I took the day off work today to go check on the car, and forgot the camera, so I'll post pictures after Saturdays visit. The rebuilding process was started after the car was returned from the upholstery shop having had carpet installed. It appears the the re-installation of parts was start at the rear. the fuel tank was installed, as were the tail light assemblies, the electric fuel pump, and the trunk mounted battery. The parking brake cable was re-attached after some fabrication of a bracket to hold the cable, you see my car is a '72 and the back half is from a '67 and the parking brake assemblies were different, floor mount lever vs. under dash pull handle. The center drive shaft support connection was the next thing that was found to be different between the two years, but a different front shaft and bearing support were installed, problem solved. Also, somehow the brake line to the right rear got mangled and will be replaced.

One piece that we are missing is the left rear door exterior window trim, the lower piece that holds the window felt, so if someone has one it would be extremely helpful.

Another item that I need some suggestions for is, because of the role cage I will not be able to put the interior door handle on because they interfere. Now, I don't need to open the rear doors from the inside, but I do want to be able to lock the doors, if I park the car someplace that I am not able to see the it. So let's get those creative juices flowing and find a solution.

Jes,

I won't be there with the car, but I thought about signing up for the Intro group driving the truck. I will try to make it out to provide moral support, but not sure which day.

After they're done putting mechanical stuff back together, it's back to the body shop to correct a few oversights: paint needs redoing on all wheel arch's and both rocker panels, both front and rear valance panels need to be redone, and while the left front fender appears straight, the inner supports and structure were not welded, and of course a complete polish job to make it so bright you'll need dark glasses to look at it during the day.

I have inside door trim from a RR door; you need just the piece that goes along bottom, inside, of the LR door window? I think they're the same, but will compare.

As to rear door locks, maybe make a handle that's flat (doesn't stick out to interfere with the roll cage), with the splines on it? Would that work? Or a pair of tiny vise grips on each one...

Andrew

Andrew,

It's the left rear door lower outside piece that I need, and I didn't think to try the trim from the right side, and I have a spare right rear door that's complete, including lots of rust. In fact, I'll go take it off the door as soon as I post this, and take it with me when I go to check on the car tomorrow.

I've found an old style vent window knob, the one that looks like a giant wingnut with the splines, if it works we'll only have to drill and tap the shaft on the mechanism, and then of course find another one. I also thought about just carrying a vise grip, there's always one in the tool kit I carry.
