Remember that the shipping company is your best ally here. They know how this stuff works and they probably know things you don't. I would have had no idea about shipping under customs bond except the shipper suggested I try that route when it looked like I was in for a road trip to Detroit to deal with customs. They had a partner they could work with who had a local facility in Columbus, and they arranged the whole thing. Cost me about $45 in ground freight (for a car, certainly more) between the two facilities. The engine was already bonded, so that cost nothing extra.
In any case if you have a good shipper they want to help you be successful. They want your stuff out of their hands as fast as possible, and that can really work to your advantage.
