Giulia Super GTA
Many years ago, I remember reading an article, about a tuner "restoring" or preparing, a Giulia Super GTA. I've never seen any material on such a car. And I don't mean the factory Giulia Super ti. It had big brakes, suspension mods, big Webers, and all the goodies.
This car was a lightened car, and as I remember, it did not have a back seat, but did have a larger, competition gas tank.
I don't remember the displacement, but the time would be about 1967 to 1968, as I was admiring an early GTV... I don't remeber it being a stepnose car... at a dealer in Boulder, CO. I would drive up to this dealer off of Arapahoe Rd., and lust over a red GTV with a big, white, Alfa snake logo painted diagonally on the hood. This car was a 1600cc machine from my memory... a 1967 model as it was pre-emissions (which started in 1968), and the dealer said there would be no more like the one he had imported.
I badly wanted that car, but it was $1000 over my budget, and bought the first Z28 in Colorado... which did not have the Z28 emblem on the front wings, but a simple "302" for the motor's displacement. My preferences at the time were the "GTV-like" Alfa, a BMW 1600, or the Camaro. My dad made me buy American, even though it was my money. I should have prepared a better argument.
But the car I really, really wanted, was the Giulia Super GTA that some tuner was building. Must have been a Giulia Super that he turned into a GTA. Does anybody remember reading the article I reference above?

Close, but...
I understand anybody could produce a GTA inspired Giulia Ti Super clone. It takes time, money and talent. But I was hoping someone other than me remembers an article in Road & Track, or a similar magazine, where this special Giulia GTA was described and photographed.
I remember a direct reference to "GTA," though it may have been the builder being inspired by a GTA, and building out a Giulia Super. But my memory holds a reference to this car being a factory "knock off" of a racing sedan.
Maybe it was the talledega Giulia. If anybody has the article socked away, I would sure like to find a copy. It covers a spectacular car.

Here's an article I have in a magazine, incidentally referring to it. This was all discussed at length on one of the Talladega threads. I have all the R&Ts, SCI, and C/Ds from this period, and don't offhand recall the article, but that doesn't mean there wasn't one, or that it wasn't in one of the many other [now defunct] mags of the time.
I think it's pretty accepted that factory TI Supers were used as GTA mules to test and develop engines, suspension, etc., and so there might be any number of cars that fit your description, probably mostly in Italy.

I forgot to say, Anthony scanned this for me, and he believes the pictured car has a sliding block rear end. That's good enough for me.

There is a genuine Giulia TI Super in Australia that also has the sliding block rear end. The car won the Sandown 6-hour race in both 1964 and 65 against opposition such as Lotus Cortina, Mustang, Mini Cooper and Jag Mk2. It's a 'straight' TI Super - no reference to GTA, although as mentioned in other posts, the TI Supers were supposedly used as development cars for the GTA program. In this case the car's importer seems to have had close links to the Alfa factory, including the services of an Alfa factory driver (Roberto Bussinello) to drive their GTA in the same Sandown race - which didn't go the distance. Viva la TI Super! It's no surprise that bits were interchanged - the TI Super in the old mag pic has GTA wheels.

Taladega Pics
Andrew- Thanks for the Taladega pics. The article I'm referring to referred to a GTA version saloon car, and from memory, the owner of the car in the article was either building out a similar car, or showing off one of only a few GTA saloons available at the time.
I wish I had saved that article.

Boy, if you find it I'd love to see it. If Anthony reads this thread maybe he knows of it?

The Final Word.
Dear Mister Newman,
maybe it could be an after-market tuning, but we have no info about Giulia Saloon GTA from the factory.
Best regards,

Note: I had enquired whether any of the factory saloon mules, which had GTA underpinnings for testing, were sold to the public, and became known as Giulia Super GTAs. The answer is "no."

On the second page there's another Giulia Berlina visible behind the Mini - wonder if that was similarly prepared. BTW, on the big pic both the sliding block, as well as the low mount rear sway bar is visible.

The only one I've heard of is the "Talladega Super" that ran in IMSA. If there are more, I'd like to hear about them and of course see some pictures.

Australian Ti Super
The Australian Ti Super was sold to Japan about two years ago.
There are now none in Australia.

I have corresponded with the current owner and he is thinking about bringing it to the next Phillip Island historics or Classic Adelaide. It had a V8 for a while but the PO who had it in Victoria for 26 odd years reunited it with its original engine which is currently being rebuilt and a respray after rectifying a bit of roll damage that happened in '68.
He had been driving it to work as a daily driver in Japan!
