I don't know the full extent of what has been done to the head, but it has upgrade cams and looks like it has had somably rough porting done sometime in its history.

I really haven't got a lot of time to invest in it to do it right. I'm hoping to change jobs and move. I'd just like to get it drivable for now. I'll probably try some snake oil (an upgrade mouse milk).

when you add the 'snake oil' or 'mouse milk' (is that in powder form?) to the radiator do you run the engine and cooling system with the heater valve open or closed? what are the advantages or disadvatages of either?
thanks

Thumbs up Mouse Milk

Snake oil and mouse milk, in this case are probably best used with the heater valve closed. The stuff does build up, and can be over applied. As has been mentioned, the best mouse milk/snake oil can still build up in the cooling passages of the radiator. Usually a flush takes care of it, while still leaving enough residue in the crack leak, to maintain a seal. Also as has been mentioned, race engine builders often apply this cure to freshly rebuilt engines. I've run Bars Leak in my sand cast GTA head for years (I do flush, and reapply periodically) without radiator problems. I use distilled water. The Bars Leak has both a water pump lube and anti electrolytic, like antifreeze, to slow internal corrosion. Zinc annodes are also good for this purpose if one runs water as a coolant. Plugging up borderline useful Alfa heaters with any of the mouse milk / snake oil concoctions it too horrible to consider. (Unless it leaks too!) Gordon Raymond

The leak in my case is not in the heater core. However i think i was ill-advised to run the 'stop leak' with the heater valve open. Fortunately i do not think that any of the passages have become too restricted.

I sealed up the head leak with K&W sealer. It's advertised as perminent repair. The antifreeze has to be drained and flushed as it isn't compatible. After the treatment, the product is drained and the system left open to the air to dry for 12 hours(drain open and radiator cap off), then flushed before filling with antifreeze again.

Gordon, I did notice there was a lot less smoke when the antifreeze was removed and I was flushing with only water.
