$21K for a Berlina????????????

No relation to seller, no vested intersest. What do you guys think? Is this up there with the Colli wagon for $100K? Or have Berlina's taken off towards the moon?

It looks like a nice car, a little more of a boy racer than my 72 http://alfabb.com/bb/forums/showthre...hlight=berlina
mine has a better interior, for that money I'd put in a new 165HP FI motor.
PS - The dollar is weak.

That does seem a pretty excessive price. It will be interesting to see if it sells. It looks like a nice car, but it's hard to tell from the photos just how good it is. You would think for it to fetch anywhere near that money it would have to be concours.

I would have thought top money for a pristine Berlina 2000 would be in the order of 8,000EU, 10,000USD, 5,000Pound Sterling.

Maybe it because of the "iranian" carpets, ha,ha. It is not that I happened to own a magnifficent original Berlina with low mileage, but I guess the owner spent a lot of money to keep it in that shape, dont count the working time, too.Keep in mind, In Europe Berlinas had big reputation. There were days where the alternative to Mercedes 200 was a Berlina 2000, no kidding...And now they are really rare, especially in good shape.
In any way, Why (and sorry for the Brit friends) must pay about the same price for a 1973 Triumph Stag Mk2 and not for a Berlina? Triumphs ( car's name is just an example) has a lot expensive parts than a Berlina? No way.

Several really nice Berlinas in the US have sold for $12,000-16,000 over the past couple years. I'm not sure you'd see such a price right now, but maybe.

Giulia sedan prices seem a bit off now, and I would expect Berlinas to follow suit. Just a guess though.

Big Bucks Berlina

Two comments:

- When I looked at the ebay auction, there were no bids. Sure, the seller has started the auction with a high asking price (the Euro equivalent of $21,542), but that isn't to say that anyone would actually pay that much for this car. Haven't I seen this car before on ebay? Those oriental carpets seem familiar.

- Given the weakness of the Dollar, the price seems distorted when expressed in Dollars. The $16,000 Euro asking price is probably a month's worth of Starbucks for the average Swiss citizen (Yea, I know, the Swiss use SF, not Euro - but the car is in Switzerland, and the asking price is expressed in Euro).

People have to realize that it costs that much money to restore any of these cars correctly. You pretty much get what you pay for. Sometime you get lucky and find a car that has been done, which someone needs to sell, but the price can not be really viewed in that manner.

It does say 100% origianal not restored so it seems pretty well cared for.

From the limited pictures, it does look very nice and original, but I personally have trouble believing a 35-year-old Alfa with 75K on it, in Switzerland, has never had a lick of repaint or rust repair. Seems unlikely.

The sheepskins and the wheels clearly aren't original.

Actually Switzerland is a good place to buy exceptional low-mileage Alfas. There are many well-off people who frequently have many cars, something which is encouraged by interchangeable license plates - you only pay the insurance for the most expensive car and you can transfer your plate from car to car - there is a special mount that allows the easy transfer of the plate so you don't have to dick around with nuts & bolts. The Swiss mindset assures that cars are usually well maintained and Switzerland being a small country, travel distances are small. Further, many areas of Switzerland, despite having snow in the winter, never used salt until relatively recently except on the Freeways and there aren't many of those. A good friend bought a 1900 Berlina in Switzerland in 2002 that had under 45,000 chauffeur-driven miles (70,000km). Except for the paint the car was phenomenal - no rust anywhere.

I agree with Allegerita, about Swiss. I 've seen many good old cars there. I guess the worst case for an old car is not the (unsalty) snow but beeing besides salty water, like a sea. The best is living on the mountains, with no humidity. From the posted pictures we cann't decite if it worths the asking price. But again, If someone has a perfect Berlina or spent 15.000$ on it, and all of the sudden wants to sell, why not to try taking the money back?

Good luck to the owner if they get the money they're asking. I don't think the issue is whether a Berlina could be worth 16,000eu, but whether someone will pay that based on a few ebay photos. You'd have to be mad to pay top dollar for a car sight unseen.
