horn gremlins

Does anyone have access to a schematic of how the horn button is assembled on a Giulia Super? Mine has an embarrassing tendency to make contact when I'm not even in the car, eg, in my driveway at 5am. I had it apart once and I'm not 100% sure I put it back in correctly. The inner button doesn't want to 'seat' as well as it seems like it should.

HA! Welcome to the neighborhood.

How many motorbikes have you got back there?

Have you checked the connections and wire at the ends of the stator tube? Down by the steering box they crack from the header heat, at the other end you need the cover on the bullet connector, the insulation will rub off where it goes through the hub depending on the arrangement, not sure how your button assembles.

I'm sure it's in the button assembly - it's too sensitive in normal operation and will often stick 'on' unless I shift the button a little. The connectors are good and protected with their rubber sleeves.

The horn was not connected when I bought the car, so my original disassembly was to get it working again. Luckily -- or not -- only the high-pitch horn is working (thanks to prior early morning episodes, the low-pitch one is now kaput). I'm getting a replacement set but I want to fix the button problem before I install it.

And veLOce, I'm at 3 bikes. Two of them are just noisy. The third is noisy and also emits a beautiful and steady plume of two-stroke smoke. I'm sure my neighbors love me.

I'm working from memory, without a parts book, but here goes.

Lowermost is the hat section piece with the small tang and screw that the horn wire attaches to. It goes with the tang/screw downward (towards the steering box).

Next is a plate that fits in that hat? Not sure here.

Next is the big spring.

Next is the horn push assembly with the button, surround rim that fits into the steering wheel boss, with its spring clip.

Don't forget the rubber bung that centers the horn wire in the steering wheel attaching nut.

I have my parts book at home, but someone might chime in before I can get to it. Sorry if my memory's screwy.

Andrew

I'm beginning to think my Giulia has a sense of humor: the ghost horn trick happened again this morning, as I was taking a shower.

Thanks for the help Andrew. I'll take a look tonight when I get home and see if it matches what you've described.

I've seen it happen that everything was properly arranged at the horn button, but the wire was shorting inside the steering column. But first things first.
