Loose handles

I am talking about the inside handle that open the door and the knob which pulls the window up. I had to take out the door panel so to fix a lock and when I tried putting these knowb back in, they seemed to be loose and they fall off again. The metal grinds that holds them together are pretty warn. How can I fix this? I can also use super glue but I need your people's views?

Thanks

IF I remember correctly the inside door handle had a pin that went through the handle when and where it fit onto the post, and window crank was held on its post by a wire sort of "U" clip, I think the winder post is fluted as is the inside of the winder (handle) so the fix on the winder if it doesn't work when pushed all the way on its post and secured with the clip, is a new (used) winder with flutes that are not worn out. It's been awhile since I had one of those, I could be wrong

Door handles/nobs

The door handles/window winders originally have very small set screws (M2 allen screws?) that set into a groove in the splined part of the actual mechanism. The threads for the set screws are often stripped out and the set screw replaced with whatever the culprit happens to have at hand. This is usually the beginning of the end, as the larger diameter replacement screws often don't fit in the said groove anymore or are off center and damage the spline, making it hard to impossible to get the handle on the spline properly. If this is the case you can try repairing the "teeth" of the spline with a small file until the handle goes on properly again and then check that the set screw is lined up with the radial groove that is in the middle (length wise) of the spline, ie. - don't push the handle on too far or too short so as to be off center with the set screw to the groove.

This applies to the door handles and window winders of 105's with the newer handles as of 71 or 72. I'm not sure if it also applies to the older type handles.

Hope I helped you with this, cause I know by experience how annoying it is when you try to open the door and end up with the handle in your hand, so you roll down your window to open the door from the outside and can't roll it up again - worst case scenario!
regards
Bob

Make sure you're pushing the handle on far enough that the set screw catches the groove. The set screw is at an angle to the groove and seems to only catch the edge, it doesn't go straight in.

If the thread is messed up in the handle itself, I would just get another one. Rethreading such a small hole after it's been torn up is likely a losing proposition. They are not that rare or expensive. You find them on ebay, and they are around in varying conditions from pitted to perfect. I have extras, and I bet someone closer to you than me (Calif) has some.

If the spline on the shaft coming out of the door is ruined, that's a bigger issue to replace the door opening mechanism.

The best way to repair the teeth is probably with a small square or triangular file, but remove the door panel first, because if you slip off the tooth with the file you'll end up with a tear in the door panel and hate yourself for not thinking about that in advance. I had to learn that twice and believe me, I hated myself for about a week the second time around.
