Work took me though the dark-hours today.. so no progress with the car.

Thanks everyone for the comments though.

In no particular order here are some observations..

Regarding the piston meltage..

-No audible detonation at time of destruction.

only 5K revs but motor was working it's hardest for a few minutes at least at time of failure.

The pictures above were just regular driving throughout the day... the damage happened on a long straight stretch in the night.

I wonder if the combination of larger pistons and different rear end had something to do with the failure.. ie more load on the engine.. lower suggested redline... etc etc..

The rust is rust, It won't ever sleep and it's sure to be deeper than I can chase. But I will go over all the rusty spots I can access with a sanding disc followed by scotch brite disk followed by phosphoric neutralizer, followed by high-build primer followed by white paint. Someday during my ownership all the cancer in the car will be properly and professionally addressed, But that day is not likely to fall in 2007.

I won't be parting with any of the orignal parts, and I don't think there'll be any other changes for my needs from the car besides the dual carbs.

more picutres of the progress as it unfolds. tonight is reading and planning the tear-down.

This weekend the car should see some serious action.

If I remember, this engine was a hybrid with 1750 pistons in a 1600 block (presumably custom liners?), and supposedly a TZ crankshaft. If so, it'll be very interesting to see some pics of the inside once you get it opened up. The crank especially.

It does have a 4.56; Damian had Roger's change it last year; the axle came out of my 74 GTV. I would not expect such an engine to have any trouble pulling a 4.56 rear end.

Good luck, and yes please post as many pics as you can.

Andrew

Keep us posted, Sono! Is this going to be a ground-up restoration?

Not at all, I just gotta get it running again. Then service every bit that needs it.

The car ran soooo smooth, If I rebuild the engine, put in a clutch, make some bushings for the shifter... I should be able to enjoy it daily for a good long time, until I can afford to have someone else do the bodywork.

Sounds like a great plan, and being in the East Bay, you'll have lots of Alfa experts to choose from for your engine rebuild. Glenn Oliveria's rebuilding my '63's 1600; the 1750 that he rebuilt for me over 10 years ago is still purring like a cat in my '71 Spider.

For the rebuild, are you returning the engine back to stock 1600 specs or keeping all the goodies as Andrew described in his posts

I wanted to hand the engine build off, because I'm soooo busy at work. but noone could touch it till july. so I'll do it myself. I carved out extra time this weekend for dissasembly.

"use phosporic acid/naval jelly, it does not encapsulated rust, it changes the chemical process from iron oxidation to iron phospate"

I hit all the rust I could with Rust Mort last summer. That includes the bubbles near the headlamps. It should be ok for now but yeah, you'll want to address it at some point.

Just curious, Sono, which shops were in the running for your engine's rebuild?

Ok, ok so I haven't posted as much to this thread as I had thought...

But here's the lowdown for the last few weeks:

Had the radiator re-cored.
Dropped the head off at norman racing group for a Dan Marvin "special"

Wasted several hours trying to remove the engine without the tranny. -- Then started over and quite easily removed the two as a unit.

Pressure washed the block and removed all anciliaries.

Dropped the oil pan, andddd hesitated to yank the crank.. (this will happen saturday when I'm rested and prepared for whatever I find)

Bought two weber 40's, bought a 1600 manifold, cleaned up an old GTV airbox.

Bought some sheetmetal for the rockers and lower wheel arches on e-bay! Bought some newish chrome bits (front bumper and side markers).

The plan for the weekend is to finish dissasembling the block.

Degrease and maybe detail the engine bay...

Measure the shift linkages, because the mechanism needs bushings in multiple spots. I'll order some oilite bushings/materal (anybody know what the original bushings were made of?) from mc-master and machine them to size at work next week.

Next week I will also take all the semi-cleaned parts to my buddies shop and give them a proper sanitization, and make all the measurements. Then I figure It'll be a week or three of waiting on parts, and painting little bits + pieces before the balancing/machine-work and reassembly.

sorry for the lack of content and pictures.. I had hoped to keep more documentation in this thread...

MY blue GTV ends on e-bay this week too so it won't hurt so bad when I order parts/pay for machine work.

I'm still on the hunt for some period headlights and more sheet-metal! anyone with any lead's please contact me.

I'm pretty pleased to see all the work going into the TI. It's getting the attention it deserves.

Post some photos of the column shift linkage. It's a work of art.
