Name-This-Sender

My '66 Super has a sender unit in the rear centre of the head, with no wire connected.

I thought this item was a sender for COOLANT OVERTEMP warning light on later Alfas(eg: Alfettas). So, either:

- my assumption is incorrect,
- the Super has an overtemp light of which I am unaware, or
- I have a later head ??

Can anyone elaborate on the item in question.

From the Composite Workshop Manual I got for the 105/115 series no sender or any other holes can be seen on the back of the cyl head, only 2 umbraco plugs.

(on the front of the head a circle with a squre indsite should be visible on a 1600 head, probably needs cleaning first).
On the back of the block - just under the head - should be an oil vent elbow and pipe.

The sender unit that you referred to is indeed the temperature sensor and was common to the 116 models right where you have it. This probably means that you have a Alfetta head on your motor, or even possibly a Alfetta motor in your car. This can easily be cleared up by checking the numbers. I also have one of those on a 1st series 1750 motor and (to me) it's an eye sore because it just doesn't belong there, but then again thats getting darn close to nit picking!

PS.
As far as I know, the 1600 head should have a cross (+) on the front and not a square as Erik stated. 1300 = minus, 1600 = plus, 1750 = triangle, 2000 = square. Easy to remember by just counting the lines - 1, 2, 3, 4.

can we please clarify the head markings. I have a little picture that I thought I had downloaded which shows otherwise. I have a Sprint GT head that doesnt have any of these markings on it, I guess it is an early 105 head.

Oh, and Beatle. Your car may have gotten the QLD 1600 head treatment. Due to 1600 heads being hard to find, the main Alfa engine guy up here commonly replaced the broken 1600 head with a 1750 head. My Sprint GT got the treatment off him about 25 years ago I believe and I know he still does it.

Thanks guys for all the pointers.

So I likely have a 1750 head, or is it more likely that it's an 180 head off an Alfetta (I know I know....same thing....just being picky again !)

At least I won't lose any sleep looking for a wire to connect.

Head marking

@ Derek

The minus(actually perpendicular), plus, triangle and square markings (1, 2, 3, and 4 lines) are what I learned from an old buff and the following link states the same. Who knows if they were always the same etc., after all we are dealing with Alfa Romeo here and it seems that things were sometimes fairly chaotic in their history.

Question Afterthoughts

Maybe the circle with square 1600 head marking (as in Dereks picture) was a later or 116 series head!?

Although the 1750 head does have the same size valves as a 1600 head it must have larger combustion chambers and the stud holes are larger too, which would make mounting a hit or miss affair without some kind of sleeves to guide the head properly. Neither head gasket would fit either. How did your motor guy do the exchange?
