67 Super upgrade question
I'm presently re-building a 1750 w/ webers to put in my '67 Super. I'd like to keep using the original 1600's generator. I note the 1600 has a front drive pulley of roughly 4" OD, while the spica 1750 front drive pulley is roughly 5" OD. depending on which pulley I install... either the generator will be driven faster than normal ... or the water pump will be driven slower. Any suggestions on which pulley size would be the better choice to use?

Hi Charlie,
I'm running a 1750 w/generator in my '66 Super. Didn't even think to check the crank pulley size. The 1750 is from a '71 GTV w/Spica, and I assume the pulley is original. Works fine. BTW, I am using a 1750 water pump too. I blocked off the bypass port.

I would think it's more important to keep the engine cool than to worry about the generator. The generator doesn't put out much (enough) juice at low rpms anyway. On the other hand it will wear out faster, depending on your driving style of course
But why not take the opportunity to convert to an alternator?

Mike, Thanks for your positive experience,. I think would have had to use the 1750 pulley anyways. The 1600 pulley interfers with the front cover's spica belt housing. Forgive my ignorance... I've only worked with my other 1600 (spider engine) before, which water pump outlet is for the bypass and how did you block it out? More generally, why was a bypass used on the later models?
Aaron, I thought about switching to a alternator, but did not have one. I had just finished having the generator rebuilt... while I still assumed I would be rebuilding the original engine. A badly cracked 1600 head and need for new pistons and liners lead me to using the 1750. One thing always leads to another.

It sure does. You can always do the conversion later, if and when your generator fails on you. There are various threads on this list that describe the process. Too bad about the 1600 head, but a Super with a 1750 is nothing to complain about.

I put a 1750 with generator in a Super 20something years ago and had no problems of over- or under-charging. I think I had to alter the gen mount a bit (filed it thinner?) on the front cover to fit the gen mount. Otherwise no issues at all.
My current Super has a 1750 with alternator that a PO installed, and it's fine too, though the rewiring would not win any concours.
I have a good extra alt that I'll sell if you're interested.

I believe there are two pulley sizes for the generators, use the largest diameter pulley to keep the RPM down. Centrifigal force will throw out the commutator bars on the armature. Auto Delta had to epoxy the comutators in order to solve the problem. Alternators do not have an RPM limitation.

The 1750s & 2Ls have a small hose between the water pump and the bottom of the intake. It is there to allow the coolant to circulate prior to the t-stat opening. (heater works sooner?)
The 1600 intake dosen't have this port. Easiest fix is to run a 1600 water pump. If you want to use the later water pump, you'll need a 1 1/4 inch plug and a short piece of hose to block off the port.

Just to complete a portion of this thread for others making a 1750 for 1600 swap: Mike had indicated a 1600 water pump could be used on the 1750... so as not to have to fab a blockoff for the unneeded 1750 bypass outlet. I had purchased a new 1750 water pump, so I elected to return it for both a less expensive 1600 water pump and no fab issues. Unfortunately, upon ireceipt today, I found the older 1600 water pump's inlet is rotated 30 degrees lower than the 1750's and has no offset. The differences are due to the need for clearing the Spica unit on the new engines. Therefore, to use a 1600 water pump, one needs to notch out the Spica pump's belt guard (cast on the front engine cover) to provide clearance. Fortunately, this proved not too difficult. Also, the 1600 pump drive pulley is smaller than the 1750's ( though the impellors are exactly the same size) so the water pump will be driven a bit faster.

Why couldn't you just change out the water pump pulley so everything remains the same? Or are the impellers shaft sizes different?

You know..........Euro 1750 front covers are available from OKPARTS in Germany. Got mine for $75. Seems that this would solve most of the Spica/pulley issues.
