Berlina wiper motor

Hi,

The wiper motor on my '69 Berlina gave up the ghost. Is it possible to swap in a later unit (eg, from a 70s - 80s Spider)? Or is there any way to repair these things? It's pretty rusty inside, and the insulation on the wiring is disintegrated.

Thanks,
Aaron

I'm wondering the same thing

The wiper motor in my '73 Berlina was approaching dead, so I took it apart, cleaned and lubricated, and reinstalled expecting it to make about 7,000 rpm. It barely turned over once. I had done the linkage too.

I did find "lubricant" that had turned to something like creosote in the last 33 years, and the cleaning and slicking-up did seem beneficial.

A couple of later model motors did not fit. Won't work, forget that unless you want to modify a lot of stuff under there.

The car is back on the road for the first time in 15 months, and acting generally pretty good, so this being Oregon, the wiper motor has to work.

Stay tuned. It will be.

Joe

Interesting... I was under the impression a later motor would fit. Was your original motor a Bosch or a Marelli? And what later models did you try?

I was about to pick up a used motor from a 74 GTV, but it sounds like that might not work.

If you can get the Bosch part number off the motor, I'll see what I have laying around.

What I've got

The motor in my '73 Berlina (presumably the same for Spiders and GTVs) is a Bosch DHA12 039032606.

The motor that did not fit is a Marelli 12V TGE5676.

I have two other Bosch motors; both have melted wiring at the motor connection. I hope that I can clean them up inside, resolder the connections, and have spares. I'll document the process and post it on the AROO website by and by.

What fits

I just scraped the eons of gorp off my other Bosch motor. It's an -02, and will fit perfectly as will the -06 in my Berlina or '72 Spider.

The Marelli which does not fit is larger in diameter and has a different bolt pattern for the 3-6mm fasteners which hold it to the body. I was told it was off a late (i.e. 20 yr old!) Spider, but for all I know it could be Alfetta of some sort.

If the motors are a physical fit, they should work.

We are going through the wiper motor thing at the moment with our `69 ser 2 GT Junior after finding that the wiper motor in it was one solid hunk of rust and not able to be rebuilt. After trying Alfetta (too big-wide) and 2000 Berlina (too wide also and 3 wires) we`ve come to the conclusion that only a 2 wire original wiper motor will do. All were Bosch including the original-we even tried interchanging bits but the earlier motors are physically smaller and unfortunately the body pressings in the scuttle are different to the later cars (we compared my 2000GTV to the earlier car) and therefore you are stuck with fitting the original type wiper motor short of body modifications and rewiring. Anyone got an early motor out there?

Wiper motors

I have three Bosch wiper motors and linkage off of three different GTVs including a '69 GTjr, and while they have different last numbers, they all look identical.

DHA 12-390326002.... 4

The wiring is also the same, three wires. Only difference that I can see is the clamp that holds the wiring as a strain gauge is different. All work well, (and look good).

The linkage is all the same except the later linkage has adjustments on the links to change the location of the blade in park.

Also I have a two speed wiper assembly from a '67 Super, four wires, made by Mirelli, no numbers seen, with the linkage, also in very good condition

George, thanks for the generous offer but I have an idea that US market cars are different in many more than the obvious things to the UK market versions we got in NZ. The wiper motor we took out was definitely different to the later model motors-I bought a 2000 Berlina unit because I thought I could swap the innards over or adapt or somehow wire in but no such luck-all I`ve ended up with is a spare for my 2 litre GTV. Are you sure the `69 wiper motor is 3 wires and same size as later units?

Regards
Richard Jones
