Surely you could do the livery up and perhaps fore-go the light on the roof, then you wouldn't have to get approval from the police. At the end of the day, you might have "Polizia" or "Carabinieri" written on it, which isn't even English-Language!

Yeah but it wouldn't be any fun without the lights and siren!

Damo - i have an idea.

Ray Gulson once ran a 1750 berlina in touring cars here in Australia, it was white with some simple stickers on the side. Man I would love to see that. Imagine that out doing some sprints - a period Berlina with an Australian racing flavour

Here's a picture from the Berlina Register site of a semi-replica Berlina police car in Sweden.

Thanks for the pic.

Pete, do you have an old pic of Gulson's car by any chance?

If I was to build a street/track racer, I think I'd go with the red and green bonnet stripes over white.

A few years ago, I convinced my uncle who works for the Carabinieri to sell me a siren for a CAROC member. Getting a hold of Italian Government property is not the easiest thing. Nevertheless, Roberto now has a Polizia Giulia Ti complete with working siren.

Pete

Just had a look at the Bathurst 1000 race results for 1969. Ray Gulson ran 11th overall, and third in his class (class E = over $4500, hehe) in the 1750 Berlina, behind a 1750 GTV and Ford Falcon GTHO.

Would love to know what mods were done to the car.

Damo, there are two pics over at www.autopics.com.au, but ive seen another somewhere with "GULSON" and some other stuff on the side.

Very few mods would have been done mate, because everything in those days had to be homolagated as production. A classic example of this is the "built-for-bathurst" Cortina GT500. It had brake ducting standard! Also changed the filler points, fitted a bigger tank and some engine componentry, sold them through dealerships as an official model and hence were allowed to compete. This is the only reason we have cars like the Cooper S, Holden EH S4 etc. The aussie Cooper S is an interesting one too - MkII Oz cars for instance had wheel arch extensions to run wider tyres in touring cars - never seen anywhere else in the world.

Therefore I would expect that a touring Berlina would be pretty much stock - you can see in the photos it is just running on plain 14" steelies without hubcaps, and still has the numberplate on!

Smile Here, Here.

I've only just discovered this BB and like what I see. Having been a Berlina-nut since the mid 80's (wanted one then, but neither had the money or the space to keep a part time car) I like what I'm seeing here. Its good to know they are becoming a little more loved now rather than being broken for parts. I'm amazed at how many people I know who have seen my Berlina since buying it late last august have fallen for its charms, (mainly those who have previously shown very little interest in cars) and have raved about how "Modern" it seems for an old car. I went to view another Berlina in Banbury (Nr Oxford) a little while ago but it was a bit too far gone in the body department for me. One thing I did notice on this other car was that it only had one brake booster, it was a UK spec '72 2000, is this normal or has it been messed with??? as mine has two like all the others i've seen in magazine pic's etc.

I'd say messed with. Often a defective booster will get removed and the in and out brake pipes coupled directly together. My '69 US Berlina had one booster missing and the pipes coupled. I removed the other booster and coupled it the same way for more even braking. At some point I'll install a new set of boosters.

Welcome to the BB! If your green car is the one I'm thinking of, the previous owner posted some pics of it a couple of years ago that had a bunch of us drooling. I can't remember his name but he was in the UK and that's a color that you don't see very often. He was making noises about selling it about a year ago and I don't think he's posted in awhile so I suspect it's the same car.

I thought all RHD cars after about 1967 had two boosters. Is it RHD or LHD? All LHD 2000s (and LHD 1750s from about 1970 on) ought to have single boosters in conjunction with the brake MC.

Wink

It is the same car that had pictures posted a while ago, they were posted by "davey", he's the guy I bought it from. It looks slightly better in the pic's than it was when I took it on, but now its had a real good wash, polish hoover, oil change, valve reshim, carb overhaul, plug leads, various bits freed off and lubed, it's far more pleasant to live with. It has spent a long period (about 9 years) doing nothing at some point in its life and in recent years has changed owner a few times. It still has the poor starting from cold issue but once fired up it just keeps on going. I think its down to an electrical gremlin somewhere as it only does it from cold/standing overnight, I read somewhere on this BB about a common fault with some kind of resistor in the feed to the distributor (can't find it again) can anyone help?? I'm not to up on the ignition side of things, I work in a car bodyshop so don't get that involved with the grunt department just the steering and suspension!!!
PS The "other car" was a UK spec. RHD
PPS All Alfa's should have their OE Air filters removed by law and a sticker put on the dash saying "PLEASE DRIVE HARDER AND FASTER!!!"
