Jaeger Temp Gauge Either Lazy Or Dead

My Berlina came off the truck yesterday from Italy. It's a beautiful little piece, all original, no rust, etc. Only issues I've found so far are some fairly deep cracks in the intake manifold gasket, limp seat belts, and what appears to be a balky engine temperature gauge. When cold, the needle is at the 1/4 mark on the gauge. When car is warmed up, it's at the halfway mark. So, it's getting juice, but am I getting anything like an accurate read? In other words, should I have this dealt with immediately or am I safe using the car?

The warm setting sounds like the right one, and they do sit at more than 0 when turned off. To test, turn the car on, groud the water temp wire, from the sending unit, on the engine. If the gauge goes to full temp, it's probably OK.
