67 giulia super engine rebiuld Q's

I'm currently rebuilding a 67 guilia super and would like to know who to by parts from in the united states. I also have Q's about what type of stock valve replacements to use with guides and seals. I have an early oil pump,(NOT A DEEP PICK -UP) AND NEED TO FIND EITHER A SET OF GEARS OR A NEW PUMP. aLSO WOULD LIKE TO FIND A COUPLE OF SHEET METAL REPLACEMENT PANELS ( FRONT LOWER VALANCE (RIGHT BEHIND THE FRONT BUMPER) AND A DRIVER SIDE REAR WHEEL LIP PATCH PANEL.

oil pump

I don't think you're going to have much luck finding an NOS short pump or gears. I don't look at ebay every day but I've never seen one there. Your best bet would just be to replace your shallow lower sump with a deep one and use the new style pump. That's what I did on my 67 Spider. A new sump is available from IAP or Centerline for less than $150.00. Good used ones show up on ebay for $25 - $50, depending on who's bidding that day. Good luck.

Welcome to the AlfaBB.
Open the very first Forum titled Anything About Alfa Romeo etc and you will find a thread called Suppliers. There you will find the names of many very good people who support the Alfa community.
I have a '75 Giulia Nuova Super 1300 and found most of what I needed at Centerline and Hurtienne in Germany who specialzes in 105 series cars. The exchange rate now forces one to look harder in the US where the currency problem is still about a month away. Just about any and all of the US house are good dedicated folks. I like to find a good one and generally stick with them. Nothing like hearing the guy on the phone recognize your name.

I've heard from Jon Norman that only the deep type pumps have been available for the umpteen past years. So unless you find a good used, or NOS short pump lying around, you might have to use a deep pump with the proper sump bottom piece. Are the gears different length, or just the pump pickup?

shallow sumps

I may have a couple of good used pumps- for reasonable! When I first started racing with a 1600, I tried the shallow sump (for ground clearance) At the end of the first weekend (at Willow Springs) I spun a rod bearing! My freind, Tranquilo Bulgarini, an ex Auto Delta mechanic, chastised me for using it. He explained how the deep sump was developed (as used on gtas) because the Jolly Club of Milan were loosing motors on their TI supers. Personally you may be better off with a brand new pump and a new/used bottom pan. Fred.

OK --

Since we're on the subject of '67 Super oil systems, I need some help before the thaw and I take mine out of storage.

When I first start it up, the oil pressure is fine, sits right at 55 psi. But, as it warms up, the pressure decreases. When fully warmed up, I have to get it to 3000 rpm and above, for it to barely get to 35 psi, if that far. And the guage goes to 0 (!!). It pulls ok to redline (I don't do that often), and does not overheat. But before I put it away, I noticed a slight rhythmic knock that I know is not the timing chain.

A buddy here who knows Alfas drove it and suggested the crank may be missing a plug or two (?). I don't believe it's the sender, but am wondering if I have the wrong pump, as described above.

Some history: the car has been completely renewed with the exception of minor cosmetics, has a 1750 with Webers and I'm running 20W50 oil in it.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Sorry for one item left out in the previous post:

AT IDLE, the oil pressure goes to 0.

Sounds like you may want to invest in a mechanical oil press. guage to further test it. The senders that Alfa uses quite often read low and the oil pressure at idle is low anyway but the knocking is certainly a concern. Next time you fire it up you may want to try disconnecting the spark plug wires one at a time. If the knock goes away on one of them you probably have a bad rod bearing (sometimes the knock goes away when the pressure of combustion is removed from that cylinder).

Also, from what I understand, the problem with crank plugs backing out doesn't occur with much frequency until you get to the nitrided 2 liter cranks. Though you could always drop the sump, clean out the sludge and have a look around. Lower sump gasket is about 7.00 and upper sump gasket about 20.00 from IAP. You may have to drop the center link to remove the upper sump though.

Bill--

Thanks for the advice. The obvious thing to do is be careful bringing it out of storage. What really concerns me is that the engine is a fresh rebuild by a known Alfa expert. I'd hate to think something was amiss, unlikely as it is.

I'll see if your steps yield any results in the Spring.

Thanks again.

Hmmm. You might want to buy an automotive stethescope (they're pretty cheap at most parts stores) and try to pinpoint the knock. Then give the rebuilder a call with your symptoms. He may know better than any of us what it might be. For what it's worth, my 1600 Duetto's O.P. gauge reads almost the same as yours except revving it up over 3K brings it closer to about 50 psi. This after a rebuild of the bottom end (including pump). It has run fine for 30k since. I just found this in Braden's Alfa Bible "Modern Alfas show no oil pressure at all at idle with a hot engine, a characteristic I've never appreciated." p.36

Already have the stethescope and it will be one of the first things I do.

Very eye-opening quote from Braden; I have all his books, so it looks like review time of the Bible for me.

As I re-read your advice and study Pat's stuff, I feel a little more optimistic about the issue.

Thanks again for taking time, Bill.
