Review of convertible top boot for Roundtail Spider

As far as I know, there is only one manufacturer of this part. I had an original and felt a new one would add the final touch to my car. The bottom line is it gets a failing grade from me. The fitment is poor and it is not patterned after the original. The metal bits seem to be perfect replicas and can be used to make the correct looking and fitting boot......which I plan to do.

Here are pictures of my original. As you can see, the new production ones are lacking detail and fitment.

I've wondered if an upholstery or boat vinyl shop could just refit a new skin to the frame, using the old as a pattern. Mine is original, but one side of the metal has come out of the fabric / vinyl. I rarely used it, though - just plopped the down down and went.

I am sure they could make one that fits. I thought buying one that is already done was the way to go.

I'm sure I will rarely us it, but I'd like to have it just the same. Call me strange, I just want all of the correct bits for my car.

I had a boat upholster make me one - horrible. I won't use it. I really don't see why this would be so hard to do...

I tried, several years ago, to replace the cover on mine - a very original Duetto that I bought new in '67. But I found that the material is tough to source. Original is very heavy material and is not available - at least not easily - in the US. It really does need to be as heavy as the original.

Osso - you still have one of the best photo-documented roundtail ever!! You should make a coffee table photo book!

Just curious, was it made by Paolini?

Who is that? If there is more than one vendor, I'd like to know who they are.

They're out of Italy. PAOLINI snc - Interni Auto

Back in the 80's they had two different Duetto boots and listed them as Series 1 and Series 2. Just wondering if you need the other one.

Osso,

Did you get yours from Classic Alfa or directly from Elvezio Esposita? I've noticed some of the interior bits from CA are not from Elvezio anymore. The one from Elvizio is 220 Euro, while a similar one from CA is 170 Euro ($177.80 USD). Mine is from CA and fits about like yours, rather disappointing.

Merry Christmas,

Stu
