1982 Long Beach F1 Alfa Romeo leading the first lap.
Andrea deCesaris driving, from Pole Position, in the 182 Alfa full ground effects car, led the race until Niki Lauda (McLaren #8 in the background) passed him on lap 15. deCesaris crashed the car on lap 30 right in front of me. Game over Alfa. Was really a shame as deCesaris could have easily finished second.
Queen Mary in the background.

Right, but he was fast. Qualifying was spectacular, deCesaris beat Lauda for the pole by .19 seconds at the very end. Lauda the fox knew he just had to wait for deCesaris to make a mistake during the race and he had him. As it turned out Lauda out powered him down Shoreline drive for the pass. Andrea must have had brain fade because he crashed with no one around him.???

Boy, I remember it like it was yesterday. I was in the stands the day before when Andrea took pole- we couldn't believe it!
Know why they gave Andrea the number 8 car at McLaren? Because the number reads the same way upside down- which Andrea's cars usually ended up!

Andrea deCesaris was #22 and Bruno Giacomelli was #23 for Alfa Romeo. Nikki Lauda was #8 in the McLaren. At least this season. But giving Andrea the #8 would make sense because it reads the same either way.
I miss the Long Beach F1 race (went to everyone of them). I scanned this photo from the 1983 program. I believe that was the last year for F1 there. Wasn't nearly as good when they brought in the Champ cars. The engine scream when the F1 cars went down Long Beach blvd. was unbelievable. The sound bounced off all the high rise building and went all over the downtown area.

Andrea was #8 for McLaren in '81, the year before. Good news is that McLaren received free crash testing of their then-new carbon fibre tubs.

deCesaris was crying for joy as he climbed out of the car after winning the pole. Very emotional moment! I was at all the LBGP F1 races, in "whites" till the last one... shot the last one for LaBatts Beer featuring GV & Ferrari... alas they pulled the commercial before it was edited due to Villeneuve's untimely death.
I would sure like to get my hands on the 6,000 feet of 35mm we shot that weekend!

In "whites"? Were you a course worker? I worked as a Cal Club flagger from about '72-'78. Worked the F5000 race and the first three F1 Events at Long Beach. I gave it up after my daughter was born. IIRC, Dan Johnson was the flag chief in those days...drove that billious yellow BMW 318.

Oh yes, she was one person you didn't mind spending the day with while working turn 9 at Willow during the November regionals
