Buddy of mine who just bought a 1 ton Duramax Silverato with the 6 speed Allison auto trans claims he gets 17 mpg on a trip. Not bad considering the vehicle weighs about 10,000 lbs when you compare it to my 2 ltr DD that weights 2300 lbs and I get double what he gets. I get double the mileage in a vehicle thats 4.3 times less weight and has much better areodynamics.

That mileage sounds about right. I've got a 1-ton Diesel Ford 4x4 w/ a 5-spd Automatic, and I average 17-18 on trips unloaded and without the trailer. I just set the cruise control at 70. When I go to Albuquerque to see family, I alway seem to get 21mpg on the stretch between Flagstaff and Albuquerque. However, I get about 10mpg at 65mph with the trailer loaded for a weekend at the track (car, tools, spares, etc), and uphill, downhill, flat, it doesn't matter.

The bad news however, is that I saw my first station with diesel at $5.02/gal, a Chevron in Ventura, CA.

He said he loaded it up with a "hit and miss engine" , no, not an Alfa, a big 250 lb rock, and a bunch of bales of shingles, and he did loose a mpg - it went to 16.

Last trip to Europe, over 1.5 Euro per liter, almost 4 liter per gallon, about $1.50 per Euro or, violla, over $9.0 per gallon. Same fuel. Much of that is taxes. Americans have gotten way too comfortable with cheap gasoline. Alfas will rock with MPG and fun/$$. I've been getting over 26 MPG on high rev twisty and open road driving with a stock 1750.

Not much longer until we see people car-jacking gasoline trucks.

I'd like to see what happens when the cops try to ram or shoot at that thing

I really doubt it; especially tanker trucks hauling diesel fuel. The dangerous ones are the tanker trucks that are mostly empty.
