The tax that is part of the fuel price is a species unto itself and is a percentage (like all tax's), so the higher the fuel companies pump the the prices up, the more the government rakes in in revenue.

It understandable, but unacceptable, why the government doesn't use it's anti-collusion laws against fuel companies who raise the cost of fuel automatically in regaurd to an apparent price rise (like public holidays), but take an age to bring it back down when the cost's actually fall.
Yes VAT is appllied to most items apart from food, childrens clothes, books and magazines. There is a reduced rate of 5% on domestic fuel.

So when it comes to petrol we pay 17.5% plus the fuel tax duty which adds about 80% to the actual price. PLUS we pay ROAD TAX which is another minefield. For example on my S4 its around $400 US a year to drive it on the road...then of course there is insurance on that which carries a insurance premium tax.

Playing the Devil's Advocate here: The upside to all that taxation; Last time I was in England, the roads were in excellent shape & should you crash your car, the nationalized medical system insures you'll be well taken care of for free. Here in the good ol' US, when you've hit a massive pothole in the crumbling road that subsequently throws you in a ditch, the first question anyone asks you is "do you have medical insurance?" Better hope that you do, lest you be dropped off at the farthest, busiest, crappiest "General" hospital in the county!

sorry to disillusion you but since your last visit things have taken a down turn over here. Our roads are no longer our pride (estimated 3.5 million potholes on our little island) and if you do hit a pothole and get taken to one of our hospitals you have a good chance of catching all sorts of super-bugs. Check out these links; Potholes.co.uk potholes, road repairs, council highways, forums
NHS superbugs on the rise - Telegraph

I know my friends in the States always complain about the high cost of medical insurance and I agree its high. Unfortunately it seems to be going the same way here, that is if you want prompt service in a pleasant environment.
Sorry to have gone of the subject of petrol/gas cost but it does make interesting reading to see how taxes compare in our different countries!
Don't get me wrong, I think that England is a great place but I do envy the wide open spaces you have in the States.

Short life, how is your gtv6 getting 29-30 around town? EPA suggestions were around 20 I think.

My Verde is getting around 19, and I've just replaced plugs, wires, and o2 sensor some months ago.

Well... Before I did the heads in the 164 and put some cams in I got mileage in the high 20's . Now it gets around 20-21 MPG. The 'Ol GTV-6 was around 12-15 MPG. It ran a little lumpy

You guys are complaining on a very high level, aren't you.

Benzin is 91 RON, Super 95 and V-Power 100 RON. Prices are in € for per litre.
Picture is from last week.

thats the funny thing i have no idea how it gets that..course i dont know the status of whats been done to the engine as the previous owner bought the engine from someone back east.....aside from the engine i do know its a 410 gear transaxle and running ansa exhaust with "test pipes" AKA no cat straight pipe from engine to rear ansa muffler..and sitting a hair lower than euro spec

ive checked the MPG on it atleast 8 times in the past 2 years and its always in the same range...

someone will yell at me but i drove from tacoma to portland keeping up with a bmw m3 turbo jetta and 2 other cars...turned a 4 hour drive into a 2 hour drive ..and i STILL managed 28 mpg and we were holding speeds of 90-110+.....was MUCH fun

My '82 GTV6 had a range of about 500 miles per tank. Granted it was fairly new at the time.

BULL! Haha, okay I took the bait, but lets examine this further unless you have a 4 cylinder masking itself as a V6!

There is something amiss in the equation; possibly your reliable Alfa electronics (speedo, speedo sender, gauge, etc.). At 90 - 110mph (which is NOT smart, but we're not talking about that yet), the car is just sucking down gasoline, just guzzling it. There seems to be after a certain speed, say around 75 - 80, that these cars just start guzzling gas. Since you have no 6th gear, your engine at those speeds would be turning 4 - 5k rpm. This is definitely not in the economical range.

Oh! Is it a hybrid conversion???

I'll buy into this one. Living in the NT of Australia when there were no speed limits on the open roads I've owned and run both 2L (DellOrtos) and 2.5L (L-Jet) Alfetta coupes. Cruising at 100mph (160-180KPH) in high temps and high humidity made very little difference to the economy of either car. I think 4K rpm in both the 4 and V6 is quite economical as it's around the peak torque area.

Heavy use of the throttle (open/close) seems to have more impact on economy than constant high speed at stable throttle openings.
