You guys still have it lucky. Fuel here is cheap at the moment, at only AU$1.02 per litre (is it 4 litres per gallon? my conversion skills are a bit rusty...)

Only two things to say about this thread:
1) Thank all you Californians for bearing the despicable tax load you live with and spareing the rest of us this burden.

Well, never mind the price we pay here...but, anyway, at least we have 95, 98 and BP is trading 100 octane gas!

You can get 100 octane (RON + MON / 2) at the pump here in the CA, Bay Area. It costs $4.39. If you use 12 gallons of 91 octane, you need about 3 gallons of 100 octane (for a total of 15 gallons) to bring up the octane to 92.8 (about 98 RON).
You can get 104 octane and it costs about $7/gallon. Not really needed on even mildly modified Alfas (engine wise).
On a per octane basis, it is cheaper to get the 100 octane stuff
104 octane costs $0.067/octane point
100 octane costs $0.044/octane point

Let's take this to another level....
Today the price was 6.30 US$ per gallon of 98 octane here i the south of Sweden. Btw that's below the average price here.

Don`t cry guys. In Holland we pay 1 euro 45 for 1 litre Euro 95!
About 1 dollar 25? For 1 litre! So it can be worse.
