I picked up a Seek Thermal near IR imaging camera this week. It's a tiny little thing that works with an iPhone or Android phone.

A Thermal Camera for Your Smartphone | Seek Thermal

It's got a real NIR sensor with 206x156 resolution, which doesn't *sound* like much but is pretty good in the IR camera world. It also only costs $200, where most professional systems are $1000-$3000.

Picture quality is decent. Not sure how well it's going to work for close-up work: I plan to play around with it a bit to see how well it works on the car: things like tire temperatures, exhaust temperatures per cylinder, radiator temperature distribution...that sort of thing. If you have anything you want me to try, let me know.

It's pretty amazing living in the future. Thirty years ago the only way you could get IR images was with a nitrogen-cooled camera the size of a lunchbox. Now you can pop it in your pocket.

Pics below are of the car about three hours after shutdown on a cool night.
