I respect that moderators have the power to close a thread, and by the way, I agree that too many inappropriate pictures and comments have polluted the thread. However, would it not be better to temporarily remove the users who continually piss of the moderators and don't give a darn in lieu of closing a thread with 1,500,000 looks? That's what me thinks :001_smile:

Delete offending posts. Warn offenders. Ban repeat offenders.

The system we have now deletes offending posts and bans everyone.

Looking at the decision from a different perspective with recent news events and having nothing to do with my personal opinion of the thread, previously the bb was owned and moderated by an individual. With the sale of the bb to a corporation they have to be more liability conscious because it is more than the individual and his family involved.

Anyone that reads, even a little, knows that Google has proactively data-mined whatever they could possibly do within legal bounds and have numerous lawsuits pending about tracking individual keystrokes and other private data usurped in the process. This week it was disclosed that Google is using an algorithm to data-mine for porn posted to any of the websites that they are associated with or control and are reporting their finds to the police to obtain search warrants against the individuals, who posted the material.

Yes, they are looking primarily for pedophiles and child pornography, but we all know how the net thrown can capture unintended targets. Autoguide is most likely trying to protect their corporation from any litigation, based on this thread having been allowed previously. At least, they will have the defense that it was closed, if discovered.

For anyone who thinks I'm defending Autoguide; so far from the truth. I don't like the bb's moderation or other rules since the bb has changed hands. It's become a heavy-handed, authoritarian, driven organization.

So, were there complaints, or was this just a whim?

I don't recall seeing anything "inappropriate" - a bunch of childish comments by people (myself included), but nothing that anyone is going to jail for. Unless those were immediately removed (in which case kudos to the mods for doing so, but that is the job description).

Yes such a thread is probably offensive to some, not to mention somewhat disrespectful - and the internet has a habit of crossing cultures without mixing them very well. If this is the case, then the fact that the thread has not been deleted is puzzling.

Well I think the point here is that there has to be a limit, and someone has to enforce it. Not that I necessarily agree with where it was drawn in this case, but I'm glad I don't have to draw it and enforce it.

So lets all get with the program and move on down the line.

With any luck, this thread will be unlocked soon and we can all continue to enjoy as long as people stop pushing the envelope.

Perhaps a "report as innappropriate" link (with some threshold) could do the trick of balancing and ease down the duty of monitoring by Admins. After all, this is a forum and, as such, and for bad or worse, is naturally succeptible to each of its members' viewpoints.

I enjoy this thread quite a bit and have never come accross nude or otherwise innappropriate content - of course, it doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

In any case, it's no secret that women love to pose and show their stuff; all the girls portrayed there seem to be of age, show awareness of the shoot and are clearly enjoying their time, so I don't think we should be concerned on their behalf or go 'feminist'.

I, for one, would like to download all the pics there, because, most sincerely, the sight of such beatiful cars with girls around them, is IT and gives me reason to go out and make my car look good.

Interesting part is that majority of the pictures are lifted off the public domain which run a wide range of taste spectrum. I have yet to encounter a tasteless personal pictures posted, i.e. the ones actually taken by the members themselves.

So we are basically taking something from a public domain and posting them here. Unless these are found offensive to the board members themselves, how does that violate or propagate anything else?

If this was a European based site, then this topic would be non-existant.

Not Necessarily Public Domain

One legal point... and this is such an urban myth and very common misperception about the Internet and public domain...

Just because a photo or an article is posted on the Internet, that does NOT, repeat, does NOT mean that it is in public domain and free to copy and use as anyone wishes. I myself post many of my own images (that I have created) on the Internet and I assure you that they are not in the public domain nor free for anyone to use as they wish. And, as copyrighted photos and text are protected under the auspices of the U.S. Copyright Office, using them illegally amounts to breaking a Federal law.

And, yes, I agree that the overwhelming vast majority of members' photos are in good taste.

My two (legal) cents,

David

Come on guy, what's so hard to understand about "work safe" or "child safe" -- which pretty much equates to "no nudity"?

#20 ·
Nudity ?

I didn´t really understand what "nudity" had to do with the pic showing a woman sitting on top of the car/roof. Picture taken from far away and just showing the back.

Could anybody please explain to an European visitor ?

Yes , we don't have any nude statues in the US....but we do all over Europe...and nude "art" in museums....hmmm....some nudes are art ,some are not......imho a nude from the back = not frontal nudity is totally different

I will repeat - when you post here you agree to the Community Rules. We each have a personal opinion but we have to abide by the rules.

By way of example, and not as a limitation, you agree that when using the Communication Services, you will not:

Publish, post, upload, distribute or disseminate any inappropriate, profane, defamatory, obscene, indecent or unlawful topic, name, material or information.
Self-moderation will keep that popular thread alive. Pushing the limits will get it closed & possibly deleted.

I understand the difference in views of European members. And it is frustrating in that a 'fully clothed' person could be more sexually suggestive than a simple nude. But let's try to keep in mind this a forum focused on Alfa Romeo cars. Not female forms. The thread under discussion was started to show photos of women & Alfa's as used in general media advertising. Not to post 'pin-up' style &/or naked women posed in the vicinity of an Alfa Romeo.

Clear as mud? Keep it clean & "G/PG" rated (suitable for viewing by children) and we can all enjoy the thread. Push the boundary and the thread becomes more trouble than it is worth and it all goes away.

None of this makes sense. The moderator has a right to moderate. He has the right to warn and to remove repeated abusers. The knuckle heads that continue to abuse their privileges are going to continue to do that no matter what. That has no bearing on closing the most popular thread on the BB. This reminds of certain disciplinary methods when a child does wrong and the whole gang of siblings get punished. Just get rid of the offenders and be done with it. It's really that simple. :punk:

Yes, but we live in a time, in a world, where "The Catcher in the Rye", or even "Huckleberry Finn" would not be publishable works.
And we are a lot poorer for it.

Not comparing these pictures to literary classics, but there is a parallel.

The big irony here is that the airwaves and cinemas are full of content which is meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Naked dating on prime time? Plenty of simulated sex and nudity on supposedly regulated/censored media. So parts of society seem to be getting more liberal, and others more conservative, at the same time.

KILL ALL THE LAWYERS! Americans need to lighten up. Been to Europe many times and you Americans wouldn't believe it! The questionable pictures were done in good taste as far as I'm concerned. We need to get a Life, Americans that is. We are all concerned with stuff that is NONE of our business, and it occupies peoples lives way too much. I can't imagine anyone who ventures on this Forum would be offended by the THREAD.

I also agree it had to be removed. There are too many Doug and Wendy Whiners in this country. I as well am sick of this current attitude and philosophy in this country, but it's the way it is!

So you WHINERS out GET A LIFE!

The way things are progressing, this thread is in danger of shutting down too.

Thank god for the "number picture" thread... I believe it made past "69" without any issues so its safe...

#33 ·
Well, I for one, and I think, my fellow mods, don't want it shut down.
We just don't want the boundaries pushed, and childish retorts and clutter.
A lot of the borderline, if you will, pics, would have been fine, but for the few who felt offended and complained.
So, let's play it safe and stick to beautiful women and great Alfas, both with their clothes on.
A stripped down Alfa offends ME more than a partially nude Woman.
