Haha, sounds like your Alfa went down well with the Bimmer crowd.

Mat, we should organise a Melbourne Alfa cruise or a track day sometime in the near future. Best keep further discussion to PM though, so as not to clog this thread with our off-topicness.

Automatic Alfetta Sport Sedan with '91 Spider 2 liter engine swap
Our 1979 Alfetta Sport Sedan automatic transmission with '91 Spider 2 liter engine swap has reflective safety tape replacing the junky and broken silver reflective originale material. Note small straight pieces of the original stuff close the gap between the reflective tape pieces in the middle of the bumper front and back. Reflective tape hopefully will compensate for lack of the front and rear fog lights my Milano and 164's have that (falsely) make me believe I am visible in fog and rain.
Engine swap was done by BJ Bob Johnson at Italian Motor Service as was supervision of the interior redo after fire a couple of years ago.
Swap included moving to more modern Air Conditioning components in the engine bay and car is too cold except in 95 degree F sunny and humid Texas afternoons when it holds its own and is liveable, not humid and quickly cool enough to back off the fan speed.
Car is great fun to drive and I now need to work on emerging rust and adjusting the engine for better economy. Seems to be in the low twenties of mpg. Would hope for high twenties eventually. Is there some way to compensate the FI programming since the engine is now in an automatic and came from a 5-speed spider?
UPDATE
Saturday 26 JL 2008 we took the Alfetta on a 230 mile highway jaunt. Seemed to be averaging about 25 mpg. Air Conditioning performed well at 100degrees F. Trick was to leave the outside air lever to the open position. Alfetta sedan has great flow thru ventilation and that obviated the need to use medium and high speed blower fan speeds and we did not even set the temp adjuster to full. Only need high fan at red lights. Car is a real pleasure to drive and looks like it will serve well as a daily driver.
Best Wishes,
Bernie Bennett

Doubt you will do much better than low twenties. The final drive on an automatic is tall, but 3rd is short, so the overall ratio is shorter than the 5 speed.
Try cruising at 55 - as if you could.

Yes - being that I hadn't planned on ever selling that car - I do occassionally wish I still had it. However - I'm pleased it went to a very enthusiastic and knowledgable owner. I do confess though - I never think about it when I'm looking at or driving the new Lancia - it's a whole different experience, but man, it's crazy fun. So fun, in fact - that lately I've been entertaining the idea of simplifying my life and selling the Alfetta Sedan - a car I've repeatedly said I'd be buried in. I'm not there yet - but dangerously close...
