Since last I posted on this thread, many things have transpired. The Spider in the "group shot" is no longer mine, having traded it for a pair of Supers. That thread is on the BB for your pleasure. Also, I've picked up an operational Berlina, and I'm using it as my daily driver, having retired the AlfJetta. I'm building the engine for the Green Super, but I had to take a day off from that endeavor to make these two cars disappear- storage space is getting to be a problem, as I said I would have the parts Berlinas gone in a month, and it's been considerably longer than that. Anyway, a few pics here of the Ginsu slicing and dicing that took place yesterday. First-the starting point.

Poor man's spring compressor...I have considerable respect for the stored energy in a coil spring- I've blasted the tips of my fingers doing it the wrong way, and I'm lucky my face wasn't in the way, because the top pc. shot about 30 feet in the air! Since my spring compressor won't fit in here, I used a piece of 3/8" allthread and some nuts to contain the spring and lower it gently until t was unloaded. CAUTION- if you use this method, watch that the top nut doesn't unscrew itself and come off as you unthread the lower nut. I was using a nylock up top, and it STILL tried to come off!

And smaller still. I'm reminded of the scence from "The Wizard of Oz" where Dorothy throws water on the Wicked Witch of the West, and she collapses into herself... "I'm melting, mellltiiing."

And the day's booty. A good set of Bilstein struts, a-arms, tierod, brake rotors and calipers, a couple of lights, a wiper footswitch, fusebox, etc. The spring perches and strut towers on this car were remarkably good for a rusty car, so I cut the out as a unit for future eventualities...you never know, and this is a common failure point on Berlinas. What's left of the car will go to the recyclers in two trips of the Berlina's trunk. Now I need to build some shelving in my garage so I can get the floor space back.

Oh, and in case you were wondering about the shop...we're yacht builders. Here was my neighbor for the day...an 82' luxury motoryacht, twin 1110 HP Diesels, bow and stern thrusters, roll stabilizers, 800 gallons-per-day reverse osmosis watermaker, custom handbuilt cabinetry, etc. Top speed is expected to be in the 30 MPH range. Strange Bedfellows.

Kai I think that is actually a dust orb. Quite normal to see that in a dusty environment with a digital camera, Some crazies think these are spirits and submit them to ghost websites.
pat well done, looks like a good couple of days work. I may have to part out my Sprint , I can sympathise with you about the smell, the back window of mine was rusted at the top and water had leaked in all over the sheepskin covers that he had on the back seat and parcel shelf. I got a face full of this stuff and then the door closed on me. Not nice. Thought I had found the Milanese equvalent of Christine. When I managed to escape I was yakking up for a while. Worth it though. The coir seat material stinks when it has been wet that's for sure. Car is dry now but has a distinct funk. prefer the smell of ALFATEX any day.
Take care,
Phil

Three-
The worst smell by far was when I began removing the dash. There had been a rat's nest in there, and there was about 5 pounds of shredded stuff jammed in there, all saturated with rat urine, oh, and the mummified rat corpse for good measure!

Yeah Phil, I knew it wasn't really the moon.
(guess I better rescind my claim to "Ripley's Believe It Or Not".)
