In The Beginning There Was...........
RUST!
Well, back in the delirium of the August heat I made a commitment to purchase an addition from a fellow Alfisti to join the two Spiders. I have pretty much been silent about it as she is a 'special' car and you never know if a deal will come to fruition or just fall through. But the deal is cemented now and I thought would share the latest addition to the fold. It ain't purty right now, but she is 'special' and solid....oh yeah...and WHITE!!! Here are just a few pictures of the shell. First registered in 1967, thought to be a 65. Note to self, must check the VIN. The Giulia Sprint Speciale in all her glory. Originally owned in Georgia (all I know of history so far), the car has around 20K original miles. Although the car is stripped, its all here and there...and everywhere in boxes. Original white car with a red vinyl interior. The car still has its original interior (mint condition) and orginal dash top (uncracked and not deformed). Rust wise, she will need work on the lower front valence, the passenger side rocker, the passenger door hinge, and a few small spots here and there. Floors are almost entirely solid as well as the trunk. So enjoy the pics and console me for what I have gotten myself into!
Best Regards,
John M

Awesome ... lucky sod. Now that will be a great project, and an absolute hoot to drive when finished.

John - it looks like it has some low points and some high points as well. It's great that someone knowledgable like you is going to bring back an interesting and rare car. Good luck and we all look forward to progress pictures.

Gee, that garage looks very much like the building that is about 200 yards and across a small creek from a barn where I got my Alfetta sedan .
I believe that there are several more (25 or 30) Alfas in the immediate area.
I'm glad she is staying close to home. I put one of my old sixes there so she wouldn't get sad in her rusty years.

Hello John
many compliments for your new Alfa Romeo.
The Giulia SS is a real nice car (like every Alfa); it's really interesting that the car is complete and original.
A friend of mine just finished the restoration of a Giulietta SS in "bianco gardenia": what a nice colour on SS curves!
Have fun with jour new project!
Regards
Giovanni

Well John, You've done it. I'm quite impressed. This car couldn't be going to a more devoted and capable ALFISTI. (Yep, it's official now...ALFABud has called you an ALFISTI.) Now if we could get you to a couple of National Meets. Of course, now that you've got this project to work on you won't be needing that '78 to have to care for. Bring it on down to my garage and I give you a farewell ride back home in it.
We could put the S.S. in my garage and work on both my 1750 GT and your S.S. through the winter months. Then we could take them both to the prison at the same time and get them both painted ALFA RED out of the same can of paint. What year is the S.S. anyway.

Well...I think Paul nailed it.
Thanks for all the kind words guys. She'll be a fun project. I still cannot get over how nice the interior looks. It really doesn't need anything done to it. I am just amazed on that. I should have snapped some pictures of that...but I was in heaven at the moment thinking...that can go right back in...its perfect.
The body was better than anticipated. Glass is still in the car. The rear glass is perfect. The front glass is not fogged, but does have a minor wiper scratch on the edge.
This car came from a local Alfisti's garage here in KY known as the Alfarm. I think he has had the car for quite some time Alex. Seems like as long as I have known him.
I won't pretend to be an expert on the SS or really any Alfa. I am sure I'll be leaning on the Alfabb and our local Alfisti from time to time trying to figure out what goes where....what is the correct part....so forth and so on. Going to be a different project from the Spiders. I felt I had some room to tinker here and there with paint color, wheels, etc. But the goal will be to get the SS back to as original as possible. Plus with most of her in boxes, the real challenge of this project is getting everything back to where it belongs. I probably won't be able to resist a polished out cam cover and plenum!
BTW anyone with photos of a Giulia SS, please forward to me at jmduncan01@aol.com. I am going to use them as a point of reference for the restoration. The more the better. And yes...once I get her home and into the new garage (may take longer than you might think as the garage is under construction), I will start a thread following her from ugly duckling to swan.
Best Regards,
John M

Thanks Taiga!
I bet she would look great in pearl....but I don't think I'll be able to bring myself to do it. I guess even down deep when it comes to this car I am becoming somewhat of a purist! Hey, that Jr. Z had chrome wheels. Maybe I could do a little..... Ah hell.... I can't! She will likely go back factory white with stock wheels (I could have an extra set of wheels though!).
A big thanks goes out to Steve and Ronan for sending me some pictures. Keep sending them guys and gals!! I can use as many as my hard drive will hold!
Well, after seeing the SS sell on ebay for $41,100 I feel a little better about what I paid and the project being worth the investment. I am certain that this car will be done and be totally in the green. NO RED INK!!!!!! That will be a first!!!!
Best Regards,
John M

I'll email you more pictures soon. I need to find them first. I'll scan the article too. Maybe people here would be interested in seeing it? I'll post it here too if so. It's from Sport & Exotic Car's first issue, a road-test type of thing on the SS.
