Interesting story regarding the Proto Taxi.
It was designed by Italdesign (Giugiaro) after he designed the first minivan (a Lancia concept, I forget the name). NYC was looking for a design to replace the fleet of aging Checker cabs. Alfa commissioned the Proto Taxi design in the hopes of selling 200,000 units to New York cab companies. In the mid seventies, the design was just too far out to be taken seriously, so the cars of choice to be a NYC cab was the Ford LTD and Chevrolet Caprice. Too bad.
Now, almost 30 years later, minivans are as prevalent as the big sedans for use as taxi cabs.
Alfa-Romeo has always been ahead of their time.
