I know that the GTA must be called GTP but the market goes like that. In the 60's they had to get the car lighter since the engine wasn t too strong. Now they boost the engine. Look at M5 and AMG so you can see that these car are more than 2tons. For the M3 for example they making the CSL that has no AC and few accesories remove to lighter the car. Smae thing for the 911 GT3 and the WRX STI Type C. Anyway if you want see a lighter version of 156GTA look at http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...category=18156 But don t do it if you have a weack heart. It hearts.

I'm so uncurrent with the alfabb! I loved those comparison pics, what a treat to look at. Okay, you all know the ultimate setup, the 156GTA tows the GTA to the race track. When I visited Spa in 1999 I saw a 156 towing a GTA. If you've never visited Spa, do it, it's my new religion.
That Fulvia was breathtaking. They've kept that easily identifiable back end character, awesome job.
I am amazed that Alfa never butchered the GTA name in all these years. It could have been just another overused, once cool, moniker. I am glad to see them re-kindle the name. Yeah, they're a bit heavy and luxurious, but Alfa has to sell cars, same reasoning as the original GTA!

By dumping all dampening, stereos, elecric seats and all that other comfort-crap they could easily have it down to 1200Kg and that could be fun with a nicely setup chassis and that highly stressed 4-cyl mentioned earlier.

The problem is that Alfa no longer produces any highly stressed 4 cylinder engines! Current 4 cylinders are all cast iron FIAT derived engines. Not a best material to build a modern GTA, I would say?
Btw, what makes you think that the new GTA with "comfort-crap" is not fun

Well, the wife and I just got back from a 2 week trip in Ireland....and I can say that after 10 days of driving our rented 156 over 1500 miles of Irish backroads...I can safely say that I really wish they'd bring them to the US. I actually miss that little 1.8 TS....it was fun, nimble and very comfortable...even at the base rental car setup.
As for the FWD...well.....hey, is the 156 GTA a FWD?

Because it's heavy?
I have driven it...
The iron block has nothing to do with building a high perf. 4. I believe that the Fiat engine has great potential at least as high as the classic Alfa, probably more even.

Hi Bigswede how will you compare the reliability of the Delte compare to the Alfa? Are the parts expensive? I m asking you because i may have one in Italy for 2000 eoru who ll need only body works. As for the years is there model that are better than others? Are all the Delta 4 doors? Thanks MAn

Maybe we should take this discussion via PM or just post the same question in the "Other Italian Cars" forum, pity to go completely OT in this thread.

I've driven it too. I bought it half an year ago, and it's absolutely the most _fun_ Alfa I've ever had. I wouldn't have bought it if it'd been a hard-core-no-compromise car. Personally I dont understand what would be the point of driving an ears-drumming, gears-whining, no sound proofing track day car on daily basis, with todays speed limits? I save that kind of fun for track days.

Well, the point in my arguments is that the GTA should be a light version without all the extra stuff for a pure driving experience. I didn't say that they shouldn't have released the car they call 'GTA' now, I'm only saying it should have been called 'QV' or similar.
I'm sure it was a better move financially to release this one with all the extras and I know a lot of people love it to death, hell, I'll probably buy one myself if I could afford it...
BUT, if I could choose between the GTA they released now or the one i described (1000Kg, 180-200Hp 4-cyl etc.) I would go for the lighter one...

Wasnt that concept car, the 156 GTAm, to be more in line with the GTA lineage? I believed it had lighter panels, more power then the 156GTA, but I could be wrong.. Never saw this car come to light? Probably would have confused too many people.. GTAm.. umm GTam? whaa and no im not confused about what the moniker GTam stands for.. and why it would be kinda weird to make a GTam these days..
The one thing I havent understood, but time will tell, wouldnt the new Alfa GT be the perfect car to have a GTA version of? Or the brera? I mean all you have to do is count the doors of the original GTA guys and girls.. hehe But i guess the 147 will do, which looks like a ROCKIN car...
OT, but I read in the new CAR Magazine that at the same time Fiat was breaking up with GM, Alfa was in talks with Maserati.. hmm now why would Alfa be in talks with Maserati...hmm.. 8c anyone? .. keep hope aliveeee!!!

Sorry guys, but despite the huge consense about the new Fulvia, it will remain a prototype. This explains why the Fiat group is facing a big crisis: they produce ugly cars and not the beautiful and sporty ones...
Someone told me that a few (perhaps 5) new Fulvias could be produced on the Fiat "Barchetta" frame, and sold at a very high price to a few lucky customers. But i think it's only a legend... In the meantime, I keep on driving my classic Fulvia and running happy
ciao
