Alfetta at Centerline
Hey everyone.
I was in Colorado this month and stopped by Centerline for a while and this Alfetta pulled up. Notice anything different about this car?

Osso,
You are correct - it is the famoust Sean Knopp Bi-transmission Alfetta. He just installed a fresh motor and ran it at (possibly the final) AlfaCirco.
He's trying to clear out a few of his cars, so the Alfetta, his V6 Sports Racer, and his Giulietta Racecar are for sale. If anyone would like to be put in contact with him, PM me.
Joe

It has a conventional 105 series transmission mounted directly to the engine, and an Alfetta transaxle in back.
Sean usually shifts the 105 transmission, and uses the rear transaxle to modify the ratios.
In other words, he will for example, get to the track, and pick 3rd gear on the transaxle and leave it there, then shift the front gearbox normally. For commuting (or higher speed tracks) he can put the transaxle in 5th for taller ratios.
The drawback is that there is twice as much HP lost to driveline friction, etc.
It was, I think, a big experiment that ended in a pretty unique car.

I have to say Ive never heard of this Bi-Transmission on an Alfetta.. Interesting.
Curious Osso, how could you see it was this system by these pics? or do you just know this car. heh. The engine seems to be sitting in the same position it would normally, and I can only really see the transaxle in the underneath shot.
That exhaust is pretty slick too, anymore pics..?
Bytheway, did anyone else notice that air filter? I could be wrong, but it looks like the Fuel Injected filter converted for the carbies? hehe.. come on does that really fool da law? jk

I am familiar with Sean Knopps' experiment. I live in the area and have seen some of his stuff. The give-away are the two shifters. Onc is in the normal place for an Alfetta and the other was the one coming out of the transmission hump. Alfetta shifters don't come out of the transmission hump, they are farther back on the drive shaft tunnel.

Does the clutch only engage the front tranny? (Meaning the rear can only be shifted (easily) while the car is at rest)? Or is there something trickier going on?

Very unique!!
I remember seeing the same setup (dual transmission) on bonneville alfetta GT at 2001 (2002?) convention in Nashville. The car had engine from 75 twinspark, and was sitting right beside that famous yellow series4 bonneville car, so it may as well be owned by Richard, the owner of the yellow spider.
