Insurance

Hi Kelly:

I've got insurance for both my Spider's with American Collectors. There are a few rules, such as:

The car has to be garaged, you must not drive the car to work, and you must have another registered/insured car as a daily driver. Their policies have no deductibles, and an agreed value, too, which is ideal for that type of car. I'm paying $180/year for both Spiders (the '74 valued at $9K, and the '87 valued at $6K).

Hagerty (and others) offer similar policies, but I left Hagerty after they wouldn't cover the '87.

phone: (800) 360-2277 Erik Smith, ext. 220

That's my agent's number, but I don't really know him, other than from my inital contact with the company. I should also say that I've never had to file a claim, and hope not to. I shopped 4 or 5 different companies, and they seemed to have the best mix of cost and coverage. I don't recall them asking about my driving record, which is clean,, but they may have.

Regards,

I'll second Dean's comments on American Collectors Insurance. We've had the GTV insured by them for the past 3 years at about $130 a year with a $15k agreed value. Wouldn't even consider a 'standard' ins company ('specially in Jersey!). And Eric Smith seems like a genuine 'car guy'.

Nice ride there, Dean!

Thanks Dean,

Should be getting an application for American Collectors Ins pretty soon so I'll see what happens. My car should qualify since it is garaged and not my daily driver.

By the way thats a nice spider you got there.

Got a pic of your 74'?

Hi Kelly:

If American Collectors doesn't work out, try Hagerty and some of the others. Without that type of insurance, I don't know what I'd do. It's not just the cost, it's coverage that matches the value of the car that matters most to me. About 20 years ago I had a 95 point XKE stolen, and I fought with Allstate for more than 2 years to get a settlement. Even after all the verification of value I provided, I only received reimbursement for the parts receipts I had, which were ~$14K, so I took quite a loss on that one.

Here's a pic of my '74. Not very good resolution, but it's the only one I have that's below the 100Kb limit.

Regards,

Dean

And here's one of the rear. I don't think there's a better-looking wheel for an old Spider than the Cromodora Daytona's, and the tires are Falken Azenis.

I have also had good luck with J.C. Taylor Antique Auto Insurance Company. Their rates and rules seems very similar to the others mentioned above.

I just got a new policy for my GTV with a cost of $64.00/year. I will also be switching my Milano to them once the policy runs out.

And finally, one of the engine bay. The 3 relays on the left fender are for the headlights and radiator fan, and I had the paint for the Spica airbox custom-blended. It's matched to the original color and semi-gloss finish of the original paint.
