I knew I had pics burried away somewhere.

This is the GTA that was formerly owned by Gulson and fire damaged.
I took these pics at Auto Italia held in Canberra in 2003 whilst the car was in Sam Calabro's ownership.

Andrew M: I'm sure I have pics of your GTA Jr (formerly Sam C's car) packed away even deeper than where I found these. I'll continue searching.

Hey all, fasinating thread to learn a little more about GTAs down under! Andrew - great to see some period shots of your car... lovely piece!

Only relevent point on the topics covered is that I know of chassis 752628 (a proper, proper car) which with a little maths makes RHD No. 128, if they were all in an uncut sequence.

Our 1600 GTA is chassis 13 - 752513 which we are now preparing for racing - hope that number will bring us lots of good luck!

Our 1300 GTA is 776131, has anyone heard of one later than that? It was originally an Italian car.

Gil Gordon 2000 GTV

Vin,

Indeed the Gil Gordon car was prepared at Foley's however I do not think
it was a "works' car. When I acquired the Alfa I followed up the history at Gil Gordon Alfa and also Rally Motors in Canberra. The car was taken off the second hand car lot and sent up to Foleys for preparation. It was never the same spec as the other cars which is often the way with customer cars being done beside team cars.
The log book showed the car as a 1974 car yet it was actually delivered in 1972 (Chassis AR 2410799). The compliance plate was missing to hide the date fudging. There was a good reason to suggest the car was later because at that time a race car could only race for 4 or 5 years from manufacture due to the rules. It was that rule which forced out many race cars. This gave the Alfa some extra time.

This car crashed out of the 1976 Bathurst when hit by another Alfa driven by Porter!! When I bought it the damage to the rear was still evident 15 years later.

Cheers
Andrew M

GTA on Grid at Lakeside 1970

Andrew M, here are a couple of photos of your GTA on the grid at Lakeside in 1970 when John French raced it. What a great history your car has

French GTA

Alfa2go,

just a further comment on your great pics. When I started to restore the GTA I stripped back the paint and although the guards had been changed to the wider GTAM type the old black markings were on the sides of the car through layers of paint i.e. where it said Clive Nolan Motors, from what I can tell the car was intially white, then red and black and finally red and white. I purchased a set of 14 x 7 GTA wheels from Ray Gulson in Canberra, and written in the inner rim was French's name and a Queensland suburb or place name name, but I can't remember that name exactly. More recently John French tracked me down to send me the homologation papers which was very decent of him after all these years!

Cheers

One more pic

had one last shot scanned. The GTA has John French's mini next to it.Andrew M, nice of John French to search you out. Pity Alfa Romeo didnt give some of the old Alfa dealers a shot at a new dealership when they came back into Australia. I heard none of the old Alfa dealers in Brisbane got a crack at a new dealership. Lot of experience lost there I reckon.

Max Banks...

Max,
Heres one - 776153

http://photos23.flickr.com/34697224_4a22911e03_o.jpg

by the way the article in supercar classics (summer 1986) of a gtaj that your dad restored started my love affair with the gta. i was in an apartment then, newly married, and dreamed of getting my hands on one someday. i still have that article (and a complete collection of supercar classics!)

Pics of GTA

Dear GTAJ,
that is one of the shots that I loaned to Tony Andriensens for his book, but they were never returned. There are a number of pics in his book and that was indeed one of them. All the pics actually came from Gordon Stephenson who race one of the LHD GTA Corsa in that very shot.

Cheers
Andrew

Andrew, I think the guy in the photo outside York is Gordon Stephenson, (local Alfa dealer) or a guy I bought my stepfront off of in 1966... His dealership was in South Perth. The significance of york is it is, or was the home of a great auto museum where they had a stunning Lancia Stratos. I also knew Basil Riccardello who was into racing Alfa's but he finally secumbed & fitted a V8 into his car. I think I must have had one of the earlier Alfa's in Perth, except to say I have seen one 2600 Spider there.

Dear Camcar's 77 dad,

It is Gordon Stephenson's car but the gentleman is not Gordon. Gordon is a relatively short English-born gent (who is now retired to Albany and is flying light aircraft to keep himself amused). I suspect the gent in the pic is someone associated with the dealer Frank Cecchele, who originally brought this car to Perth after buying it from Alec Mildren, and who maintained the car in Perth for many years. This particular car was very badly damaged at this hillclimb venue, possibly on the very day of the photo. It was later sold to Basil Ricciardello who initially ran it as a correct GTA but them fitted a Ford 302 followed by a Chev 350, not very dignified but they did that sort of thing.

Regards
Andrew M

Dear Eddy, most of this is before my time and I have had to piece it together, but I suspect the dealer you refer to is Don Reiman. The main dealer entity was Vehicle Enterpises (Young group). Other South Perth dealers but not Alfa as such were Illich (BMC) and Berryman (second hand sports cars), and Eurocars (Renault). There may have been others.

Cheers
