Red face Apologies to DaimlerChrysler!

From this article in Car Craft:

http://carcraft.com/techarticles/116_0410_hemi/

it is clear that the new "Hemi" does indeed have what is known as a hemispherical combustion chamber but with added squish zones on the edges thus combining the best of the cross-flow design with the squish/quench zones of a wedge! Not only that but it is a twin spark to boot!

Also, as far as I understand it valve overlap does help to suck the mixture in...

Thanks ... I took a look and noticed how narrow the included valve angle is and thus (unlike the Alfa Nord engine) how shallow the combustion chamber is. More like a BMW 2002 and I guess a bit like the GTAm head:

Image obtained from http://carcraft.com/techarticles/116_0410_hemi02_s.jpg

Notice thus that the piston top is very flat ... again unlike the Alfa Nord engine.

Thus I guess any combustion chamber that has the valves inclined against each other (ie. inlet and exhaust make a V) is now called a hemi. Fair enough ... thus there are more efficient hemis than others

Getting excited about this engine ... notice also how nice and inclined the inlet port is! ... this thing should be a great breather with work, the tuners will (probably) love it. One of the problems with Alfa Nord (and Ferrari 308) heads is the inlet port angle is too flat ... thus you can't get them to flow big numbers.

Pete

The new hemi dodge is twin spark for mostly emissions reasons, I believe. The hemi combustion chamber (cc) has a fairly large surface area, so to keep hydrocarbons down, they need two burn zones, makes the cc area effectively smaller. The pro's can chime in, but I believe that's the reasoning.
In vintage racing, there will always be someone richer, and someone faster, so as long as I have cars of similar speed around me to fight with, I'm quite happy.

In Search of Images and or Footage

Hello. I am working on Voom HD's hour long program called How The Best Is Done on highly tuned cars which airs on the DishNetwork and Cablevision. I am looking for images and footage of Pete Brock's SCCA Trans-Am Datsun 510 1st race and of the car fully restored. Does anyone know where I can find these and who I could contact?

Thank you for your time.
Matt

There is a great promo video put out by Datsun Motor Company about the BRE 510 Datsuns racing in the 2.5 challenge series back in the early 70's. I think the name of it was "Against All Odds". I used to have a copy but I can't find it.... Good luck, T.H.

"How To Hotrod and Race Your Datsun"

This book has all the info on the BRE cars, including some great photos.

The Datsun rear end was based on BMW's rear independent design and the engine was based upon the Mercedes engines of the time. A very smart bit of copying by Datsun. It was and still is a winning combination. A local engine builder here ran a 1600cc engine in Club Car competition here - the engine was dynoed at 220hp@9500rpm. Yes, it was a VERY serious engine but it certainly made the power, with a lot of wins to back up the numbers.

I miss my 510.

I just stumbled on this thread. I was a Datsun fanatic at the time too, age 10-11. BRE did a much better job of promoting, and everyone I knew was into Datsun, not Alfa or BMW. I remember the articles in R&T, C/D, etc, well. And you could buy Datsun posters, models, you name it. Alfa? What was that? Some weirdo car with a dent in the nose where it hit the beloved 510.

There is a lot to be said for having a great development team, and factory backing, regardless of what you start with. Plus Brock was just a wizard at organization, motivation, and prep, right? Those cars were so sanitary compared to the comparatively crude others. Brock learned his craft at the Shelby operation, no slouch in that department. And they had great engineers, mechanics, and John Morton is not at all to be slighted as a driver and mechanic, also having come from Shelby.

I didn't read through every post, but has it been mentioned to read Sylvia Wilkinson's book Stainless Steel Carrot? It's all about this; excellent. I read it over and over as a junior high-schooler. That and Sunday Driver by Brock Yates were my bibles at the time.
