I'm planning on buying an '83-'85 Alfa Spider
Do you have any pointers? I've never owned an Alfa and have little mechanical knowledge of these cars. Is there anything about these models that I should look for when buying one? Thanks!

Just wondering.... I got my first car in 1986, yet was born in 1964!!!

That is one beautiful 75! I would love to drive mine in Italy/Europe. It must be great to be able to really wind the 3 litre out over there. I loved driving in Italy and France In the 18 months I spent there last year and in 2002. Big engines are pretty rare in Europe and so are 75s these days.

My new 95 164LS. Bought it from a member of this board. Manual, 45,000 miles. Euro 16" super wheels. This is the 4th 164 I have had, and it is the best.

Oh, and yes it's great to wind the 3 litri in his native country!
There are still some old alfa fanatics and some backroads to play...
My v6 is a non-catalysed 200 hp "quadrifoglio verde"... one owner from new, full options from 1991.One of the last...
France or italy, the 75 is becoming rare, and, for the last pretty cars, expensive... In france too many petrolheads still use it (and crash it) as trackday tools...

How much do the good ones sell for in Europe? What condition does a good one need to be in to fetch a good price? Where do they rank as far as the Alfa fanatics are concerned over there? I am curious as to how it compares to Australia. Over here 3 litre 75s fetch more than 2.5s or Twinsparks because there are not that many of them around. 75s in general are underrated though in my opinion.

Well..
In France, no 2.5 "75" (non officialy imported, maybe a handful in '86)
3 litre are very current in France, private ads for a tired car: +-1500 euros
a good 3 litre (becoming rare but you can still find pretty cars):+-3000 to 5000€
As collector's interest for this car is increasing (articles in the classic car magazine) prices are moving up but on ebay you can find bargains.
there are also many ex rally cars to sell.
In 2005 I paid 3000 euros for my pristine and 100% original 75 3.0 quadrifoglio (rare model in france) air conditionned, abs, one (good) owner from new and 100.000 km.
But now i have offers at 5000...
In France and Italy more and more alfanatics consider the 75 as "the last true alfa romeo" for ever and are re-discovering this car and his qualities...so the times when the 75 were underrated are on the end...i hope..
the engine of my 75:

I've always liked the 164, and it looks great in black.
Also always been a fan of the Ferrari Mondial (yes, I actually like the 2+2s). Is the one in the driveway in that photo yours? If so, I'd be curious to hear your impressions of what it's like to live with.

Hi Rob: Thanks, and yes, that is my Mondial. To me, the Mondial is the best "value" in Ferrari. Period. Mine is the first generation, and so is the least fast. The Alfa is faster. Still, while its 0-60 times are slooow, once underway it looks sounds and drives like a Ferrari should.
Now, I have a Fiat Spider, the 164 and the Mondial. If one had to go, it would be the Mondial. It is VERY expensive to maintain, and breaks on a regular basis. Also, though it does, as I noted, have the Ferrari "feel" the cost are so high that I would cut it loose first.

Very interesting info thanks Napolean. The 3 litre prices are similar to here. I paid a bit over 4,000 Euros for mine and it is worth every cent. It had the suspension tuned and modified by the best people in Australia, so the handling is stunning. I love it.
This is my car (and me).
