After the "barn"; the discovery in the Naples catacombes

A German website tells a story of another amazing discovery. In Naples of a herd of cars that have been placed in the catacombes of Naples (40meter below the surface) by the police.
The cars included are Lancias, Fiats and I believe one Alfa 2500 Convertible.
The restoration of these cars is a bigger challenge then the Portugese barn due to the high humidity....

The text below is the opening in German:
Vergessene Oldies in den Katakomben von Neapel
Unter Müll begraben und von der Welt vergessen: In den Katakomben von Neapel blieben 30 historische Autos jahrzehntelang unentdeckt. Jetzt stieß ein Geologe bei seinen Arbeiten auf die fossilen Automobile.

Which would translate into:

Forgotten oldtimers in the catacombs of Naples
Covered by garbage and forgotten: in the catacombsof Naples, 30 old cars have remained undiscovered for decades. Recently a geologist found the "car fosiles"while he was working.

Enjoy the 45 pictures (I did)

Unfortunately I do not know how to reduce the pics to the 249 Kb limit, as they are over 600 Kb each, otherwise I would post some.

regards,

Jelle

The Alfa 2500 ?

I am pretty sure this is an Alfa 2500. it was quite common to have right hand drive cars in Italy untill after WWII.
The details of the steering wheel etc are similar to the car currently on offer by Steutel in the Netherlands, as posted in the "limited production (1910-1949) category.

Nik,

I agre with you on the 2500 PF would have been my guess as well. Most likely the emblem is on the lid of the glove compartment.....

The Cab/Convertible is a Fiat, in picture 35 (in the link in my original post)the author is wondering if the beautifull Fiat will ever be back on the road....The instruments are very strange, they look like the lid of a tin, rather then instruments like I have in my Alfa's.
Picture 37 shows the ID plate of the car, unfortunately I cannot read it...

I will post the pics later

regards,

Jelle

I wonder what is underneath all of that dust. For the most part the cars have been sheltered from the weather, but if the catacombs are damp, it can be just as bad. I would think catacombs would be dry to preserve bodies for eternity. Another 6c found. Awesome.

Nik,

Please find attched the other pics of the fiat.
I noticed that the Dutch car magazine autovisie has done an article on the discovery as well (magazine 20 in September). Unfortunately I have not got a copy.

I visited these 'catacombs' a few years back. Actually, they are not catacombs in the sense of a place to store dead people, rather they are the spaces left after stone was quarried over many years to build Naples above ground.

Some of the spaces date from pre-Roman times and they have been used for various purposes including air raid shelters in WW2. Also, and this gets back to the point of the quote, there is lots of water down there. In fact many houses had shafts leading down to provide their domestic water supply.

Altogether a very interesting aspect of Naples.

Napoli below
