Spoke with the owner again today. Still available. I have Tom going to see it(hopefully he buys it). Tom knows everybody here that has something Italian and he did not even know this car that was 30 minutes away it's whole life.

How did this Fulvia go under the Lancisti radar? This guy knows nobody in this world(not even Mike Kristick!) How many of these berlinas are actually here?

There simply aren't many cars still in the hands of their original owners. But where those exist, and their owners aren't ALC members, they tend to stay way below the radar.

Including this car, here's what I know at this point

Berlina 1C (818.000/001): 1
Berlina 2C (818.100/101): 5
Berlina GT (818.200/201): 4
Berlina GT (818.210/211): 4
Berlina GTE (818.310/311): 2
Berlina GTE (818.610/611): 1
Berlina GTE (818.612/613): 1
total berlinas: 18

At least until some more come out of the woodwork...

And to give you some idea what those paltry numbers mean, 18 berlinas represents only 0.01% of the total Fulvia berlina production.

I've got a '84 190E 2.3 with 5 speed manual and constantly have to watch my mirror in anticipation of some exuberant biddy or AH in a hurry on the phone crawling up my arse in their SUV as I shift between 1st and 2nd after the light turns green. I can only imagine this situation accentuated by the get up and go of a 70HP sedan. I'll pass... do you suppose that is why the rear end is shorter than the front? PS Don't get defensive..no hate mail please

Naturally, we're all disappointed to learn of your decision to pass up this opportunity.

But it's probably just as well. Per a PM I received on another forum, someone has now put a deposit on the car, and is making arrangements to pick it up. It will stay in the US.

Wow, I'm impressed that ALL of you are in agreement in such a quick poll. The car is a piece of iron not a next of kin, for christ sake. I just posed a
situation wanting to learn other merits of ownership that outweigh this negative. It's very eclectic. I guess you've never recovered from my bashing the 1.2HF going to Chile. Gawd it's not a personal thing. It's a god damned car. As Cher said to her lover in My cousin Vinnies wedding...."snap out of it!"

I apologize for mistaking your carefully considered question about the virtues of a Fulvia berlina for snide bashing, to which I thought irony was a better response than vitriol.

I’m not at all sure my answer to your question will make much sense, but I'll try. An S1 Fulvia berlina will never out-drag your ‘84 MB 190 2.3, and it’s certainly not a car to plant in the fast lane of the freeway without ever having to watch the rearview mirror. But it’s better built than your Benz, it accommodates rear-seat passengers with less claustrophobia than your 190, and with its precise controls and impeccable dynamics it’s an absolute joy to drive–assuming that you don’t need to light the tires from a stop light or to go 95 on the freeway. And, of course, assuming that you enjoy driving 40+-YO classic cars–which not everyone does.

So, yes, it’s just a car. But you’ll have to work very hard to find another classic sedan of its poise, quality and driving pleasure for the ‘credit card’ money it takes to buy an excellent original example.

And BTW, that Cher line is from “Moonstruck”.

Moonstruck it was!!!! I knew the actress but darned straight it took someone from Hollywood to know the movie!!!Thank you! Well, now that we've sorted through all the bad vibes and have good ones let me tell you why I am surfing this forum.. I have 3 Alfas- '57 Spider V; '57 Sprint N (in final months of redo); '72 Giulia Super 1.3 I bought from Dirk Stoer 6 years ago and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.

I have a 3 car garage (for Alfas---2 1/2 for real crap) The three all fit just dandy. The Sprint is on it's way to completion and I'm not sure I will fit being 6'3" about as tall as Arno (there aren't many Arno's on this side that own Fulvias) in Phoenix who is a dear friend from KC.

I started looking at Fulvias specifically for their sporty performance. I really like small displacement motors that sing their eyes out to ask for more. Most passengers don't get the thrill of it all until the first ride in my Alfas. I have a few bins of Alfa parts so keeping another semi trailer of Lancia crap is not in my plan.

I once met a guy from Canada named Jack Hawkes at the Portland or Seattle AROC convention in the 80's who loved Lancias. He spun some great stories and reasons to own Lancias. By the calendar, he is probably lost to the ages. I hope not.

I love the silver Fulvia in Belgium (if it is still there) but the math won't work nor my garage space.

The GT in NY/NJ is an incredible find but I can't see it surpassing my Super 1.3. Just a plug....I would take a 1.3 over a 1.6 in a second.

I sold my Giulia 1600 Veloce instead of the '57 because it was heavy.

Anyway, that's my story and I am sticking to it.

Small engined cars are GREAT FUN! I am working on buying a 750cc Siata from 1939. It has all of 45 hp, but it is in a car that ran in FOUR Mille Miglias (winning the 750cc class in 1948). It weighs all of 750 pounds dry! I used to race a 970cc ex-factory Mini Cooper in the 1970s in Europe, and actually won a couple of International Group 2 Touring Car under 1 liter races. That car only had 80hp in a car of about 1850 pounds...

So what's your point how much you personaly know Lancia's. I see you have own some Alfa's but who has not. telling us about your Purchase a Alfa from Dirk stoer I should be impress? let's keep the Lancia topic not Mercedes or Alfa. the cars you mention you have or have own are no better than Lancia's nor Mercedes in theirs own class. I respect the alfa owners but I do not glorify my cars or Any Alfa it's just a classic Italian car that has survive time after time.

Story straight here:

I had first dibs on this Fulvia and decided to pass. I already have a 2C that drives incredibly excellent and have NO PROBLEM keeping up with modern day traffic. Another classic car right now did not make sense to me right now. I drive on some of the most agressive roads there are(NYC) and still get to love my visuals through my 'real greenhouse' of a my Fulvia. There is something special about Lancia owners that Rick made very clear.

Keeping an eye on your rearview is something that should be done in ANY car on any road -all the time. $5k for this car was a steal for the condition and rarity.

I do not know what Rick 2.3 'divotandtralee' is rambling about and yes, I won't be as nice as ED here and call this guy a *******!!

THANK YOU FOR NOT BUYING THIS CAR!!!!!!

You are a basher and you know nothing about being a true collector. Stick with Alfas you will fit in better. Quoting 'Moonstruck' did not help your situation either. Sorry, but you were asking for it. Time to dust off the VCR.

Rick,

Just so you'll take my comments in the spirit they're offered, I want to start by saying that I really do appreciate Alfa berlinas. And I well understand your appreciation of the 1300s; IMHO, too many owners rush to drop in 2000s with a lot or torque at the expense of the sweetness of the smaller displacement engines.

But an Alfa Giulia Super and a Fulvia berlina are remarkably different cars, created for very different audiences. And it's something that's hard to understand unless you know both cars or have the chance to see them side by side. It won't even take the first ride; just opening and shutting the doors will be a revelation.

Alfa berlinas have more sporting character than Fulvia berlinas, and for Alfa this meant that solidity and build quality was less important than keeping weight down. The door shut on the typical Giulia Super is tinny and insubstantial. That's not the worst thing in the world; the aluminum doors on my Fulvia Fanalone are in many ways similar. But the door shut on the Fulvia berlina is silky and solid; it's better than your MB 190. And that combination of silkiness and solidity carries over into all the switchgear and controls.

And that's because Lancias of the period, particularly the berlinas, were 'old money' cars--understated luxury cars where luxury was to be found in solid construction and dynamic precision, rather than deep wool carpets and expanses of wood trim. John Surtees once described Lancia as the Italian Mercedes, and that's a useful analogy if you're willing for a moment to consider Alfa as the Italian BMW.

What this means is that if you're looking at Fulvias primarily for their sporting performance, you shouldn't be looking at the berlina--stick with the Coupé or the Sport (aka 'Zagato'). Even then, a Fulvia Coupé will be different than a GTV, and those differences generally parallel those of the berlinas. (The exceptions to those generalizations are the Fulvia HFs--lightweight 'homologation specials' that are far less refined than their brethren, and probably share more character with GTAs.)

That's about the best I can do by way of explanation. Other than that, all I can suggest is that you find a Fulvia berlina in original condition, and just open and shut a door. You'll instantly understand. Until then, you probably won't really get it.
