Speaking of going back so far, you're being pretty optimistic with the Muldoon and Toody reference...

Back to the topic, though, I do like the suggestion of a 'field trip' to a local hospital burn unit--even better, some volunteer work there.

Even better might be a Military Hospital where they can offer some cheer to some of our boys that really need it!

That'd always work, on general principles. A burn ward, though, would be directly connected to the consequences of playing with pyrotechnics.

I'll save you long drawn out details of bomb making dozens of years back, but I figure if they are still alive, they did something right. You never know when those skills might come in handy. (Notice my reserve here. . .Ed and Alex)

If they are not doing drugs, they are doing fine, period.

Exclamation Hint...

be absolutely, positively sure your son never finds out about Tannerite, the joys of mixing Clorox and brake fluid, muriatic acid and zinc strips, potassium permanganate and formaldehyde, acetylene gas in lawn and leaf bags, etc.

Or, better yet, scare some sense into him by placing a can of Tannerite in an old Fiat and...

Honestly, though, my own sons have learned about accelerants, oxidizers, tracer ammo and explosives at my own hands (which I still have); your boy seems interested in the "excitement of science" - some supervised and approved mayhem may be a good way to ensure that it always occurs in your presence.

The taboo of forbidding any experimentation may deprive you of this necessary oversight.

Very true and wise, the reason Pat and I had an open liquor cabinet policy, among other things; would rather have them at home experimenting rather than getting that 2:00 a.m. call from the police.

We also had no problem signing the overseas waiver allowing our children to drink even though they were minors, knowing that they could drink responsibly and had some tolerance. The youngest is headed for France next year.

Superbe ! We have three teenage children and, like you, do not lock the liquor - as we have not made a big deal of it, the children seem disinterested.

I could use your guidance - I am very tall, but love the lines of Giula coupes; what are the realistic odds of my fitting in one ???

Tar and feather the boy they scream.

Well you all are going to think I was to soft..............All I did was have Colin read a couple articles of gasoline safety these articles had plenty of pictures of people who were burn by gasoline explosions.

I talked to him about what could have happen with using metal gardening tools to stir the styrofoam and gas in the 5 gallon bucket within 6' of a space heater that was on and my Alfa which was full of gas.

We also talked about the legal aspect of what they were planning to do with napalm and how that would effect us as a family and how it would have effected his friends and their familys lives too.

Over all I think he gets it.................It was a dumb thing to do and they were all very lucky nothing happen.

I also got to talk to the other boys (they workout in the shop after school) and I think they got the message too. I did not call the other boy's parents............guess I wanted to leave the door open for them to feel welcome over at our house where I could keep an eye on them.

Another thing is Colin will be working for me part time till he finds something else.

Yes, probably
The resident 16-year old was severaly dressed down a few months ago after calling his mom to his ... err ... bunker/nest/whatever to show her something "cool". Upon her arrival, he set fire to the spray from an aerosol can!

I'm pretty sure it's in boy's genes; all we do from the age of 5 to the age of 22 is trying to kill ourselves in interesting ways, and any upbringing fathers do is just to limit collateral damage

Talking about the Spider.................

He wants to drive the Spider really bad but I told him he needed to get the clutch down in the VW first before I let him drive it. Well he"s been driving the VW since last May so I think it's time.

Figure I would ride with him to teach him the ins and outs of shifting but I'm a little worried letting him take it out on a friday night with one of his friends.

He refer's to the Spider as the car he'll never be able to drive and that makes me feel bad..................But my God could he could get in alot of trouble in a short amount of time with that car.
