AutoX Weekend
Hello everyone!
Per Enrique's request I'm posting to mention that there's an Autocross this Saturday, June 16th being run by the Northern New Jersey Region of the SCCA. The event is held at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
I am hoping to attend both this event and a Philly Region hosted event at Warminster Community Park on Sunday.
So if all goes according to plan, there should be at least one Alfa present. Perhaps Bobsiopener is going to be around as well? Just wanted to mention it in case anyone is interested in coming out and either driving or just enjoying the spectacle.

This is great - thanks for the announcement! This weekend I'll still be in OH, so I'll be going to the autox with the Lexington guys, but I'll be looking forward to some more of these...
Best regards,

In case anyone is interested, the Alfa performed flawlessly during the weekend's events! If only the driver could do the same....
From an AutoX perspective, there's definitely much room for improvement in the stock GTV6 suspension area. It seems to take the car ages to settle and in transitions this means I'm constantly driving in an almost 'open loop' control scheme. But once I get it figured out, she goes pretty quick! And she already responds beautifully to attitude control via the trottle, so I can only anticipate that improving with suspension upgrades as well!
Results for NNJR on 6/16/07
Results for Philly Region on 6/17/07

Pictures, please!
And get some drop spindles, you'll be happy!
I'd like to remind you that having a large bar with the drop spindles might be too much. I think my car would have been happier with a slightly larger than stock or stock bar, now that the front end grip is so improved!
I have yet to take it to the open track or autoX with the new setup (been in Japan and Taiwan) but I'll be sure to let you know what I find out.

Japan and Taiwan eh? Sweet!
I'm contemplating my next move concerning the Alfa and it's suspension. As you know, Grant, I've been involved in discussions about the pros and cons of the drop spindle on both this BB and the alfagtv6.com/bb forum. And your recent results are super-encouraging. My internal debate now centers on the legality of the drop spindle in SCCA Solo competition.
Now, I'm not looking to claim any national championships or anything. I just did a NorthEast Divisional event and was pretty well trounced by some really skilled folks. Having said all that though, I would like to play within the rules.
So, I may just be going with the relatively standard, but supposedly good, upgrades: 27.3mm T-Bars, some upgraded (size not determined yet) Anti-Roll bars, and some springs for the rear (again....rate not known at the moment). Obviously I'll go with Poly bushes where possible and the like....
As for pictures....Here are some from last weekend's (7/7 and 7/8) NE Divisional event (I'll have to dig for some ones from the events I was at when I posted this thread...). Enjoy!
Looking good here...
Apparently decided making that apex was too much effort...
THAT'S more like it...
Man, I love that car...
Almost looks like I know what I'm doing in this one...
New Angle!
Actually got pretty close to that one...'bout time.

Great pictures!. The GTV-6 looks like it is getting a good workout. Regarding allowable modifications; the SCCA Solo rulebook is online at www.SCCA.org
The thought process is:
1. Cars must initially be in stock condition
2. Nothing is allowed unless specifically listed
3. Classes beyond "Stock" have additional modifications that are added to those already allowed in Stock
So, if it doesn't say you can add a modification, then you can't. I just did a quick review of the Street Touring section, and didn't find anything that allows drop spindles. I noticed you didn't list shock absorbers as one of your upgrades. Most successfull Soloists have adjustable shocks an one of their primary modifications. Of course, one can go crazy here; I have seen autocross cars with Penske double adjustable shocks (just check what the cheapest Penske set costs, and you will understand why I used the term "Crazy").
Good luck!. Keep the pictures coming. It's great to see Alfas autocrosing.

Hey George,
Thanks for the encouraging feedback! The 'getting involved' process has been really enjoyable, and it seems that the more I do it, the more I want to do it. Which is a fun/scary thought!
I'm definitly trying to get familiar with the rules and allowances. I've also been reading Sportscar magazine, and they've had some interesting write-ups recently. One was on preparing a car for competition in a Stock class and another was on the preparations that went in to building a National STS winning Nissan 240sx. Both were revealing and educational.
Thanks for the investigation into the drop spindle. I think that a modification like that would only be allowed in SM and/or in one of the 'Prepared' classes (perhaps not even Street Prepared), as I think those classes allow changes to suspension mounting locations. IIRC that is. And yes, I did neglect to mention dampers in my listing of upcoming modifications. Mostly that's because I have a fresh set of Bilsteins on the car, but also because I've seen "Crazy" and its a set of double adjustable, external reservoir Motons that a Philly Region fellow has on his RX-8. They're absolutely beautiful, and cost him more then my GTV6 cost me.
At the moment I'm debating my future.... Sounds more 'Camus' then it is really. But basically I need to figure out just how aggresively I want to build my GTV6. She's in rather nice shape, and I enjoy just taking her out for drives. I think this sort of activity would be compromised if I built the car to full STS specifications. Thus I think what I may attempt to do is gently modify the GTV6 but stop short of "crazy" ( ), and work on polishing my driving skills for a year or two. Once I feel like I'm getting everything out of my car (thus I'm less 'driver limited'), I will look into buying a GTV6 I can dedicate to Solo.
Then, I might go "crazy" with the modifications. And at which point I might start a thread dedicated to my acquisition and preparation for, leading to my ultimate domination of, STS.

All,
Sorry, I've been a bit remiss in posting all the upcoming Autox events in the area. Too busy attending them I suppose.
It isn't in NJ, but it isn't too far:
Philly SCCA Autox @ Warminster Community Park - Sunday 10/28
You can pre-register for the event at MyAutoEvents (Free Site Registration Req.) if the event isn't full via online registration, you can sign up in person. You don't need to participate to enjoy the event though, plenty to watch if you're just interested in checking it out. Or you can grab a helmet and jump into the passenger seat for a personal introduction to the course.
Hopefully it'll be a nice day and more Alfas then my lone GTV6 will attend!

Sorry for not getting back to you. I never checked back in a regional thread that I didn't live in!
What is the widest tire you think you can fit at the front and rear of a GTV6? For the Milanos it seems to only be aroudn 225 or 215 w/o doing major front end surgery.
