Hi!
For a few years I am working on chassis registers of some limited Alfa Romeo production cars. I collect magazines and books and with help of the www (and Alfabb of course) I have listed some thousand events and photos regarding the Giulietta SVA (Alleggerita), SVZ, SZ, Giulia TI Super, TZ, GTA, GTAJ, GTAm and the Tipo 33. I will try now to write down something about the SVZ but of course it will never be complete. As you see there are many open questions left, not all the cars can be confirmed and I hope I did not make too many mistakes. Please feel free to add information, tell me what is wrong or simply enjoy the photos (I hope there are no copyrights with them, most of them came from the www or from the Alfa Romeo archives). And … sorry for my bad english
Martin
So let's begin

1) 04657 is correct, the car was owned by Johann Wax, who entered the Sprint Veloce with various drivers in international events. After he had the car rebodied by Zagato, it was entered with Herbert Schultze only. In late '59 Wax sold the car to Schultze since Schultze started to deal with cars. Later Schultze took over Wax' Alfa Romeo dealership. In early '60 Schultze sold the SVZ to Bernd Degner. I always wondered since Degner had only a handful of entries with the car. Now it seems that he shared the car with Horst Frischkorn, who raced it in Francorchamps. Later owners were (correct spelling) '61 Ernst Gertsch and '62 Wolfgang Steidle.

2a) Kurt Ahrens Sr. raced a Sprint Veloce from '56-58. According to his son Kurt Jr. he might have purchased it directly in Italy and not through German dealers. He then had it rebodied by Zagato. Ahrens Jr. told that they had sold it to Walter Becker, a dealer in Ahrens' hometown Braunschweig. Ahrens Sr. & Jr. were a DNS in the '59 1000-km-Rennen at the Nuerburgring, possibly they destroyed the car during practice. A week later at the Rossfeld hillclimb they were a DNA. No history after that for the car. Since racers for decades, they kept no papers of their cars.

2b) Ernst Furtmayr told that he bought his SVZ possibly in Switzerland (he kept no documents, too). Originally the car was sold in Italy. In '61 Furtmayr raced the car until he bought his SZT. It is a different car from Ahrens'.

Video with Ernst Furtmayr SVZ at Pferdsfeld Flugplatzrennen 1961

Race coverage starts about 8:28 into the video (preceded by a report on the Autosalon in Geneva). First an SZ is shown, then the SVZ that seems to be in hot pursuit by an SS.

Slightly different coverage of the same race in Trier (including Formula V and pit stories), shown starting at about 7:40 in this video here: filmothek.bundesarchiv.de/video/584660. (I could not resists including the Formula V Finish line shot with the 102 Berlina and the tail of a 102 Spider in the background).

Post 207: Thank you Tim. You dont need to apologies.
The only way we can cover new ground, is to exchange thoughts..
But the Huber car, I do find interesting.
Does anybody know in witch magazine, it was printed that it should be built on a SWB chassis from a Giulietta spider. Or the magazine that the Stern car was on a Giulietta Spider chassis.
Personally I do think that it is a misunderstanding by the Journalist. So it could be of interest to know where that history starts.

This car has a weird looking chassis number (see photo below from this site). A yellow car with claims to the same chassis number (that seemed to look straighter and therefore more original than this one) was offered 2-3 years ago.

If you take a close look, Ruedi, at both with chassis this chassis number. You will find that the yellow one dont have a Zagato roof line.
It’s a well-known
cars with chassis # 04458 in this tread.
This car, it has come for sale a couple of times during the last 20 years, at least.
You will find both cars In this tread

I've followed this thread with some considerable interest over the years.

Ruedi's post $+#744 above also raised a red flag for me - look at the 8 at the end of the chassis number, the 2 circles making up the number are identical in size, whereas on all the chassis stamps I have ever seen the lower "0" of the 8 is bigger then the upper "o", a split of about 1/3rd to 2/3rds by my eye.

Compare this against my two '57 Normale's 05823 & 05880.... the lower portion of the 8 & the 5 are the same dimension, the reverse is true for the 9 in the Tipo 1493. Also the 4 in the chassis number should match the 4 in the Tipo, the vertical line does not go all the way to the top - see 04818

I'd do a really detailed examination of that chassis number before I parted with any money.... I know that damage happens in racing and chassis numbers do get holes punched or drilled through them etc, etc & I'm in no way knocking this car or the owner or the seller, but that number just doesn't sit right for me the way it is right now.

n. 47? SVZ Fernando Wissel, Vaud (CH); yellow; 1cl? (GT1.3, see film at 15:15 min)
n. 59 SVA X.; red (GT1.3, see film at 16:18 min), '60?
n. 50 SVZ X.; red with yellow stripe (GT1.3, see film at 16:26 min), '60?
Hello Martin,

I haven't seen the yellow SVZ of Fernando Wissel. Indeed, Wissel was owner of a svz during year 1960 but the registration was GR (Grisons) and not VD (Vaud) !

The svz n. 50 is certainly the car of Bernd Degner (VIN 04657).
