156 2.4 Jtd No Power!!

I have a UK spec 2001 2.4 jtd that when you put foot down on accelerator there doesnt seem to be any power at all under 3500rpm then when the turbo kicks in the car will start to accelerate normally up until about 4200 rpm, the engine management light then comes on and the car loses power again for about 5 to 10 secs! then light goes out and off we go with power again!! BUT! then when you change up a gear and let your foot of the clutch there is no response at all from the engine (its like you have just run out of diesel) until you dip the clutch again and it is suddenly ok and will accelerate again!!
Have been told that it might be air flow mass meter problem, but they are expensive and dont want to change it for nothing. Its driving me mad so can anybody help??

is it a petrol engine or a diesel?
If it's diesel, does it actually have an air flow meter (it shouldn't need one should it?)

Other than that, check your electrical connections are clean & tight, check any hose connections for leaks, failing that, check your wallet isn't empty...

It's a Commonrail Diesel, very good engine.

I think you need to take it to a shop so they can diagnose the ECU.
