156 2Ltr twin spark

Hi all

Not sure whether posting in right place but need some advice please, i own a 156 2Litre twin spark on a Y uk plate. My car is an automatic gearbox but recently has started to shudder slightly when stationary when moving off but is ok moving through the gears. Then the gearbox warning light came on i have not moved the car since however the warning light has now gone off. I obviously do not want to cause any more damage to my car by driving it but my nearest Alfa dealer is asking for a large amount of cash to recover & plug in diagnostics any ideas as what the fault may be or anything i might check before paying out such a large amount of cash.

At AlfaOwner.com (British based international forum) check the search for Selespeed or ask your question there.
I have a 2Ltr. manuel 156 and no experience with the Selespeeds.

Normally it seems to be either old gearbox oil, some selespeed relay or simply corroded contacts which cease to function.
Over here the AR-Dealers have difficulties in reparing broken selespeed-transmission, as they don´t know much about it and tend to replace the whole unit. Which is kinda expensive.
