Thinking of buying one. It's says automatic but does that mean selespeed, as I've heard that gives bother. Would love a manual but the wife can't drive one!! Any points for/against will be appreciated

there's not much information on the newer Alfa's on this forum... I think you're better off, depending on where you are located, on English www.alfaowner.com or continental europe sites like www.alfaclub.nl
Good luck!

Peter is right, Alfaowner is the place to look and ask.
But, a 156 2,5 V6 Automatic is not the Selespeed box. It's a more conventional autobox, the modern type with electronic management and a facility to change gears up and down manually with a stick. It's the same box as used in the bigger 166, I think Alfa calls it Q-matic

Its called Q-system, its made by Aisin and has 4-speeds and H_pattern to change also manually, 3 different modes:city, sport and ice. I think its quite ok but it takes much away from performance...

166 has 4-speed ZF box (Sportronic) and in new JTD? models 5-speed Aisin
