is it possible to remove back gearbox cover while

is it possible to remove back gearbox cover while the gearbox is on the car??
or does the removal of the cover (ie cover with drain plug in it) neccessitate the removal of the drive shafts 1st??? or can it not be done at all??

ta, just want to fish out a bit of plastic
